| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | 3 | | learn of the death of Marvin Gerstein of Urbana, who passed | 4 | | away on February 17, 2020; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Marvin Gerstein was born to Abe and Ida (Glass) | 6 | | Gerstein in Chicago on February 27, 1940; he earned a degree in | 7 | | accounting from the University of Illinois and then attended | 8 | | law school at DePaul; after graduating, Marvin Gerstein joined | 9 | | the Peace Corps, living in Panama, and then returned to | 10 | | Chicago, where he worked as a criminal-defense and legal-aid | 11 | | lawyer; and
| 12 | | WHEREAS, Marvin Gerstein moved to Champaign-Urbana to lead | 13 | | the University of Illinois's student legal services program; | 14 | | there, he opened his own law firm, building a reputation as a | 15 | | solid lawyer who zealously represented his clients; and
| 16 | | WHEREAS, Marvin Gerstein was a member of the Illinois Bar | 17 | | Association and was a past chancellor commander of the Knights | 18 | | of Pythias; and | 19 | | WHEREAS, Marvin Gerstein was a published poet; he spent his | 20 | | life fighting for justice and inspired a wide range of | 21 | | reactions on his approach to life; he will be remembered for |

| 1 | | his colorful, combative, comic, and sometimes self-defeating | 2 | | style; and
| 3 | | WHEREAS, Marvin Gerstein is survived by his brother, Ronald | 4 | | (Joy) Gerstein; therefore, be it
| 5 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL | 6 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
| 7 | | Marvin Gerstein and extend our sincere
condolences to his | 8 | | family, friends, and all who knew and loved
him; and be it | 9 | | further
| 10 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
| 11 | | presented to the family of Marvin Gerstein as an expression of
| 12 | | our deepest sympathy.
