| 2 | | WHEREAS, The game of cricket is a sportsmanship game | 3 | | played around the world in the open air by tens of millions of | 4 | | people, especially young people; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Games similar to cricket were played by early | 6 | | English settlers in America; these games were driven into | 7 | | obscurity by the new American sport of baseball, but many | 8 | | words from cricket are used by baseball players and fans to | 9 | | this day, such as bat, fielder, and inning; and | 10 | | WHEREAS, Cricket never died out in the countries that make | 11 | | up the United Kingdom; many of the countries that play | 12 | | top-level cricket to this day, including Australia, | 13 | | Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan, are nations that share a | 14 | | political heritage that includes the game of cricket; and | 15 | | WHEREAS, In the nations that play cricket, the game is | 16 | | acclaimed as a way to demonstrate skill in both athleticism | 17 | | and mental poise; calmness and patience are as essential to | 18 | | the game of cricket as the ability to swing a straight bat; and | 19 | | WHEREAS, The rules of cricket enable the game to be played | 20 | | and enjoyed by both men and women, and women's cricket is | 21 | | played all over the world; and

| 1 | | WHEREAS, The game of cricket is overwhelmingly associated | 2 | | with fair play and good sportsmanship; and
| 3 | | WHEREAS, Many Illinois residents, especially younger | 4 | | Illinois residents, were born or have family origins in the | 5 | | countries, nations, and cultures where cricket is played as a | 6 | | principal sport; they would like to play this sport in | 7 | | Illinois and get official recognition as they do so; and
| 8 | | WHEREAS, Cricket, typically played at the club level, is a | 9 | | growing sport in American colleges and universities; and
| 10 | | WHEREAS, The time has come when Illinois should add | 11 | | cricket to the list of sports that Illinois high school-age | 12 | | students can officially play and enjoy; therefore, be it
| 13 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | 14 | | HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | 15 | | we urge the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) to take | 16 | | steps towards officially recognizing the game of cricket in | 17 | | Illinois; and be it further
| 18 | | RESOLVED, That this recognition process should move | 19 | | towards the organization of Illinois inter-school cricket play | 20 | | for those secondary schools that wish to field a team; and be |

| 2 | | RESOLVED, That the organization of Illinois cricket play | 3 | | should maximize the ability of Illinois-origin cricketers to | 4 | | continue their play at the college-university level; and be it | 5 | | further
| 6 | | RESOLVED, That we recognize and congratulate the pioneer | 7 | | Illinois cricket players who have begun to play this game on | 8 | | their own prior to the official games that will be played by | 9 | | their younger brothers and sisters; we urge the IHSA to | 10 | | recognize the pioneering heritage of Illinois cricket games | 11 | | played prior to official recognition and regularization of | 12 | | play; and be it further
| 13 | | RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be presented to | 14 | | Katy Hasson, President of the Illinois High School | 15 | | Association, and to Craig Anderson, Executive Director of the | 16 | | IHSA.
