| 2 | | WHEREAS, Today, there are an estimated 19 million veterans | 3 | | in the United States, and more than 720,000 of them live in | 4 | | Illinois, with the oldest having served in World War II; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Since the founding of the United States, 50 | 6 | | million Americans have served in the U.S. military in some | 7 | | capacity; and
| 8 | | WHEREAS, Some soldiers never return home and may be | 9 | | classified as Prisoners of War (POW), Missing in Action (MIA), | 10 | | or Died in Captivity (DIC); and
| 11 | | WHEREAS, Currently, an estimated 81,600 American service | 12 | | personnel are still considered MIA, of which 4,152 were from | 13 | | Illinois; and
| 14 | | WHEREAS, The mission of the Defense POW/MIA Accounting | 15 | | Agency (DPAA) is to recover fallen Americans and provide the | 16 | | fullest possible accounting for missing personnel to their | 17 | | families and the nation; and
| 18 | | WHEREAS, Many of those classified as POW, MIA, or DIC are | 19 | | never given a proper burial, and many lie in unmarked graves | 20 | | across the world; and

| 1 | | WHEREAS, The United States has always striven to ensure | 2 | | that every soldier be returned home and continues to search | 3 | | for and find fallen soldiers from past wars; therefore, be it
| 4 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL | 5 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare September | 6 | | 16, 2022 as POW/MIA Recognition Day in the State of Illinois as | 7 | | a day of remembrance to honor those who bravely served their | 8 | | country and never returned home; and be it further
| 9 | | RESOLVED, That we support the priority of the United | 10 | | States to bring every fallen service member home.
