| 1 | | HOUSE RESOLUTION | 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | 3 | | Representatives are disappointed to learn of the closure of | 4 | | the Springfield Regional Processing and Distribution Center of | 5 | | the United States Postal Service; and | 6 | | WHEREAS, The U.S. Postal Service has been a staple of | 7 | | American society during the 248 years of the American | 8 | | experiment, allowing communication and the flow of information | 9 | | from town to town, city to city, and state to state for | 10 | | generations; and | 11 | | WHEREAS, A year before the official founding of the United | 12 | | States of America, the Continental Congress recognized the | 13 | | need for a postal service by appointing Benjamin Franklin to | 14 | | the office of Postmaster General in 1775; and | 15 | | WHEREAS, Although advancements in technology and business | 16 | | have made the U.S. Postal Service seemingly a relic of the | 17 | | past, its importance cannot be overstated nor its significance | 18 | | to national security, secure correspondence, and tradition; | 19 | | and | 20 | | WHEREAS, A local post office connects a small rural town | 21 | | to a larger interconnected network of nationwide communities |

| 1 | | while offering many beneficial functions, such as arranging | 2 | | the delivery of a care package to a loved one stationed | 3 | | overseas, providing passport applications and renewal | 4 | | services, and making available the purchase of money orders; | 5 | | and | 6 | | WHEREAS, Massive central hubs and smaller distribution | 7 | | centers may be acceptable for privately owned businesses; | 8 | | however, the U.S. Postal Service is not a privately owned | 9 | | business but is instead a government-owned corporation; and | 10 | | WHEREAS, The U.S. Postal Service employs roughly 525,469 | 11 | | individuals nationwide, with its staff including mail carriers | 12 | | who deliver mail to your mailbox, mechanics who perform | 13 | | routine vehicle repairs, and clerks behind the counter who | 14 | | remain committed to providing passport services, selling | 15 | | stamps, and weighing and correcting postage for packages to be | 16 | | shipped; and | 17 | | WHEREAS, The closure of the Springfield Regional | 18 | | Processing and Distribution Center extends beyond its | 19 | | employees, who will potentially lose their jobs, to local | 20 | | residents whose vital mail deliveries will experience delays; | 21 | | and | 22 | | WHEREAS, The Springfield Regional Processing and |

| 1 | | Distribution Center employs many, and these individuals | 2 | | alongside various local leaders and other U.S. Postal Service | 3 | | employees recently voiced their concerns regarding the loss of | 4 | | the Springfield Regional Processing and Distribution Center in | 5 | | a robust public gathering; and | 6 | | WHEREAS, News regarding the closure of the Springfield | 7 | | Regional Processing and Distribution Center and additional | 8 | | processing and distribution centers across the country should | 9 | | not ring in indifferent ears but rather should concern each | 10 | | and every constituent in every district in every state; | 11 | | therefore, be it | 12 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | 13 | | HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | 14 | | we urge Postmaster General Louis DeJoy to reconsider closing | 15 | | the Springfield Regional Processing and Distribution Center; | 16 | | and be it further | 17 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 18 | | delivered to Postmaster General Louis DeJoy. |
