| HOUSE RESOLUTION
| 2 |
| WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives have
| 3 |
| learned with great sadness of the death of Mary Margaret | 4 |
| Haskins Jacobs of River Forest on Monday, October 17, 2005; and
| 5 |
| WHEREAS, Mrs. Jacobs was born in LaSalle; she moved to | 6 |
| Chicago seven years later with her mother and seven brothers | 7 |
| after her father's death; and
| 8 |
| WHEREAS, Mrs. Jacobs married Dr. William Francis Jacobs in | 9 |
| 1941; throughout their 46 years of marriage, Dr. Jacobs | 10 |
| affectionately referred to Mary Margaret as "my bride"; the | 11 |
| couple would often retreat to the porch of the family home to | 12 |
| paint together; and
| 13 |
| WHEREAS, Mrs. Jacobs, a child of the Great Depression, | 14 |
| believed education was essential; she attended Loyola | 15 |
| University and graduated with a degree in elementary education | 16 |
| from Chicago Teachers College; she considered it a personal | 17 |
| responsibility to attain an education; and
| 18 |
| WHEREAS, Mrs. Jacobs was a Chicago public school teacher | 19 |
| until 1941; and
| 20 |
| WHEREAS, Mrs. Jacobs was a devout Catholic; the only thing | 21 |
| more important to her than education was her faith; she named | 22 |
| three of her daughters Mary in honor of the Virgin Mary; and
| 23 |
| WHEREAS, Family was sacred to Mrs. Jacobs; she raised | 24 |
| thirteen children, gently but indefatigably prodding them to | 25 |
| fulfill their potential; all thirteen of her children are | 26 |
| college graduates; and
| 27 |
| WHEREAS, Each of her children was born into a culture of | 28 |
| strong faith and strong education and each felt unconditionally |

| and equally loved; and
| 2 |
| WHEREAS, Mrs. Jacobs was very generous and sought to help | 3 |
| people in Southern dioceses and those in the Pacific Islands; | 4 |
| she seemed to effortlessly comprehend the struggles of others; | 5 |
| and
| 6 |
| WHEREAS, Mrs. Jacobs had a rare gift in her ability to put | 7 |
| others at ease with her presence; and
| 8 |
| WHEREAS, She was preceded in death by her husband; and | 9 |
| WHEREAS, The passing of Mary Margaret Haskins Jacobs has | 10 |
| been deeply felt by many, especially her eight sons, Bob, | 11 |
| William, Thomas, Vincent, Edward, James, Gerard, and John; her | 12 |
| five daughters, Mary Margaret "Honey", Mary Elizabeth, Gahan, | 13 |
| Constance Christenson, and Mary Rochelle; her twenty-three | 14 |
| grandchildren; and her great-grandson; therefore, be it
| 15 |
| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | 16 |
| NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | 17 |
| we mourn the passing of Mary Margaret Haskins Jacobs, and we | 18 |
| extend our sincerest condolences to her family, friends, and | 19 |
| all who knew and loved her; and be it further
| 20 |
| RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 21 |
| presented to her family as an expression of our deepest | 22 |
| sympathy for their loss.
