| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | 3 | | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Stephen | 4 | | Ray Hartman of St. Joseph, who passed away on May 31, 2011; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, He was born on October 20, 1946, in Paxton, a son | 6 | | of Lyon Weldon Hartman and Dorothy Fritzen Hartman; he | 7 | | graduated from Champaign High School in 1964, and from the | 8 | | University of Illinois in 1969, with a degree in ornamental | 9 | | horticulture; after graduation, he began his 42-year career as | 10 | | a self-employed real estate developer; and
| 11 | | WHEREAS, In the early years, he built houses, room | 12 | | additions, and small apartment buildings; he later specialized | 13 | | in campus apartments, eventually joining his brothers, Jeffrey | 14 | | Hartman and Michael Hartman, to form JSM Apartments and other | 15 | | partnership entities; he was an integral part of the Campustown | 16 | | 2000 Green Street improvement initiative; he was a loyal | 17 | | Illini, a lifetime member of the President's Council, and a | 18 | | member of the Loyalty Circle; he loved to wear his orange and | 19 | | blue and cheer on the football and basketball teams; and
| 20 | | WHEREAS, He sailed Flying Scot sailboats and participated | 21 | | in many one-design regattas; he especially loved to go to the | 22 | | mid-winter regatta in Florida; for years he helped host the |

| 1 | | Glow-In-The-Dark Regatta at Clinton Lake, with Flying Scot | 2 | | sailors coming from all over the country; and | 3 | | WHEREAS, He is remembered as having a "larger than life" | 4 | | personality; he was always active in the community; he was a | 5 | | member of the St. Joseph-Ogden School Board for 12 years; he | 6 | | was interested and involved in Parkland College, and served | 7 | | multiple terms on the Parkland College Foundation Board; and he | 8 | | was Chair of the local Republican Party for some time; and
| 9 | | WHEREAS, He loved to travel, especially to Paris and | 10 | | Bavaria; he was an avid gardener, recently starting an | 11 | | orchid-growing hobby; he was proud of his ability to tie many | 12 | | kinds of knots; the Doobie Brothers, Rolling Stones, and any | 13 | | kind of vintage rock, was always playing in the background of | 14 | | the euchre games; he was a true foodie, with an extensive menu | 15 | | collection; he was an accomplished cook and could turn out | 16 | | dozens of the world's best cheeseburgers; and | 17 | | WHEREAS, He loved the Boy Scouts; he was active in scouting | 18 | | for decades; he started as a Webelos leader of Pack 40 in St. | 19 | | Joseph, he progressed to Troop 40 Troop Committee, Scoutmaster, | 20 | | then Assistant Scoutmaster; he guided his son, Dennis, through | 21 | | becoming an Eagle Scout; he was active in many projects at Camp | 22 | | Drake, and cooked for many Klondike Derbies and other events; | 23 | | he was a Vigil member of Order of the Arrow; in 2001, he |

| 1 | | received the Silver Beaver, the highest award a volunteer can | 2 | | attain; and
| 3 | | WHEREAS, Stephen Hartman is survived by his wife, Laura; | 4 | | his daughter, Marianne L. Hartman Tichenor (Christopher); his | 5 | | son, Peter E. Hartman (Melissa Johnson Hartman); his daughter, | 6 | | Nancy E. Bussell (Eric); his son, Dennis R. Hartman (Andrea | 7 | | Wilbon Hartman); his grandchildren, Colette and Conrad | 8 | | Tichenor; his brothers, Michael R. Hartman (Debra) and Jeffrey | 9 | | R. Hartman (Sarah); his nephews, Christopher Hartman (Gozen), | 10 | | Patrick Hartman (Leslie), and Andrew Hartman; his nieces, | 11 | | Rachel Hartman, Lauren Hartman, and Michelle Ferrell; and many | 12 | | other young people in the community who might as well be his | 13 | | sons/daughters; therefore, be it
| 14 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | 15 | | NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | 16 | | we mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of | 17 | | Stephen Hartman; and be it further
| 18 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 19 | | presented to the family of Stephen Hartman as a symbol of our | 20 | | sincere sympathy.
