| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | 3 | | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Mildred | 4 | | J. Wiley of Chicago, who passed away on March 26, 2019; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Mildred Wiley graduated from Providence St. Mel | 6 | | High School; and
| 7 | | WHEREAS, Mildred Wiley's life of service was grounded in | 8 | | her love of community, her faith, her belief in her fellow | 9 | | humans, and the hope and determination to improve the life | 10 | | chances of children and families; she had served on the Greater | 11 | | West Town Community Development Project's (GWTP) Board since | 12 | | 2013; her leadership role on the board was one of many | 13 | | commitments she made to the people of Chicago and to the | 14 | | residents of the West Side in particular; and
| 15 | | WHEREAS, Over the years, Mildred Wiley was involved in | 16 | | public education, job training and employment opportunities, | 17 | | lifting up the formerly incarcerated, promoting community | 18 | | revitalization and economic development, preventing violence, | 19 | | and creating safe spaces and places and greater educational | 20 | | opportunities for youth; she was a champion of GWTP's West Town | 21 | | Academy and the Shipping & Receiving and Woodworking Vocational | 22 | | Skills Training Program; she often attended graduation |

| 1 | | ceremonies at the Academy and Skills Training programs; she was | 2 | | active on the local and national levels, serving on elementary | 3 | | and high school local school councils and working with networks | 4 | | of education reformers and social and economic justice | 5 | | advocates across the country; and
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Mildred Wiley believed in being hopeful and | 7 | | positive; she never gave up on trying to solve the most | 8 | | challenging and stubborn problems facing the community and took | 9 | | on each challenge with a quiet dignity, ferocious passion, and | 10 | | dogged determination; and
| 11 | | WHEREAS, Mildred Wiley is survived by her husband, Houston; | 12 | | her children, Corey and Colby; and her grandson, Joseph | 13 | | Robinson; therefore, be it
| 14 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | 15 | | HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | 16 | | we mourn the passing of Mildred J. Wiley and extend our sincere | 17 | | condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved | 18 | | her; and be it further
| 19 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 20 | | presented to the family of Mildred Wiley as an expression of | 21 | | our deepest sympathy.
