1 SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of
3 Illinois were deeply saddened to learn of the death of
4 Carleton F. Nadelhoffer Sr. of Naperville which occurred on
5 Friday, May 23, 2003; and
6 WHEREAS, Mr. Nadelhoffer was a lifelong Naperville area
7 resident; he grew up on his family's 180-acre dairy farm,
8 just south of Lisle; he attended Avery Coonley School in
9 Downers Grove, the Tamarack one-room country school near
10 Oswego, and Oswego High School; and
11 WHEREAS, Mr. Nadelhoffer served his country as part of
12 the 11th Airborne Division from 1946 until 1948 in occupied
13 Japan; he later attended Carleton College in Northfield,
14 Minnesota, where he received a bachelor's degree in 1952; he
15 married Joanne Leckband the same year; and
16 WHEREAS, Mr. Nadelhoffer attended the University of
17 Chicago Law School on a Laird Bell scholarship and received
18 his law degree in 1955; he was invited to practice law with
19 Leroy Rechenmacher in Naperville in 1957; as the partnership
20 evolved, he served as the senior partner for more than 35
21 years at one of Naperville's leading law firms and the oldest
22 continuing law firm in DuPage County; and
23 WHEREAS, For 30 years, Mr. Nadelhoffer served as chief
24 counsel for the DuPage Country Forest Preserve District,
25 helping obtain more than 20,000 acres of land for forest
26 preservation purposes; he was instrumental in many civic
27 endeavors and played a role in the formation of the
28 Naperville Heritage Society, the Edward Hospital District,
29 the Central Area Naperville Development Organization, and the
30 acquisition of the Naperville North High School site; and
31 WHEREAS, Mr. Nadelhoffer served as President of the

1 Naperville Chamber of Commerce and headed a successful drive
2 to form the Naperville Park District; he helped initiate
3 Naperville's first "Last Fling" Labor Day celebration; and
4 WHEREAS, He was a member of the board of the Naperville
5 National Bank (now US Bank), a trustee of the First
6 Congregational Church, a director of the Lion's Club, and
7 chairman of the first Naperville Park District Citizen's
8 Advisory Committee; he also served on the Naperville Fire and
9 Police Board of Commissioners for 9 years and was its
10 chairman for 4 years; in 1973, he was elected to the North
11 Central College board of trustees, a board he served on for
12 20 years and was named a life trustee in 1986; and
13 WHEREAS, Mr. Nadelhoffer was active in local Republican
14 politics and became the Lisle Township GOP chairman in 1959,
15 a position he held for almost 20 years; he led the successful
16 DuPage County campaign for Richard Ogilvie during the 1968
17 Illinois Governor's race; and
18 WHEREAS, Mr. Nadelhoffer was an avid reader and enjoyed
19 traveling and meeting new people; he delighted in telling
20 stories about growing up on the farm and the earlier years of
21 Naperville; each summer, he would spend lunch times at
22 Centennial Beach playing pier tag; and
23 WHEREAS, The passing of Carleton F. Nadelhoffer Sr. has
24 been deeply felt by many, especially his wife, Joanne; his
25 son, Carleton F. Nadelhoffer Jr.; his daughters, Laura
26 Nadelhoffer Seizovic, Sarah Nadelhoffer Antonio, and Ellen
27 Nadelhoffer; his brother, Herbert Nadelhoffer; his sister,
28 Caroline Orman; and his 5 grandchildren; therefore, be it
29 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL
30 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that, together with his
31 friends, family, colleagues, and community, we mourn the
32 passing of Carleton F. Nadelhoffer Sr., who will be

1 remembered as an active civic leader and family man; and be
2 it further
3 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
4 presented to the family of Mr. Nadelhoffer as an expression
5 of our heartfelt condolences.
