SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Duchenne muscular dystrophy affects approximately
3one out of every 5,000 live male births; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Globally, 20,000 children are diagnosed with
5Duchenne muscular dystrophy each year; and
 
6    WHEREAS, There are an estimated 15,000 people in the U.S.
7living with Duchenne muscular dystrophy; and
 
8    WHEREAS, With increased funding for research and rapidly
9improving treatments, people with Duchenne muscular dystrophy
10have more hope than before; however, there is currently no
11cure for Duchenne muscular dystrophy; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Earlier diagnosis of Duchenne muscular dystrophy
13in children could improve health outcomes for those affected;
14and
 
15    WHEREAS, Symptoms of Duchenne muscular dystrophy include
16progressive loss of strength and function in the hips, thighs,
17shoulders, pelvis, arms, lower legs, and trunk; later in life,
18strength in the muscles of the heart and lungs, heart
19function, and breathing are also affected; and

1    WHEREAS, Newborn screening will improve health outcomes
2for children with Duchenne muscular dystrophy; therefore, be
3it
 
4    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
5ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare September
67, 2024 as Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Awareness Day in the
7State of Illinois; and be it further
 
8    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
9presented to Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy (PPMD) with our
10sincere appreciation for their efforts to address Duchenne
11muscular dystrophy.
