| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened | 3 | | to learn of the death of Larry Hagen of Oak Park, who passed | 4 | | away on April 26, 2022 at the age of 82; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Larry Hagen was born in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin | 6 | | on March 24, 1940; he attended the Holy Cross Seminary in La | 7 | | Crosse, Wisconsin for high school and college, graduating in | 8 | | 1962; he spent one year at St. Paul Seminary in St Paul, | 9 | | Minnesota; he ultimately decided that priesthood was not for | 10 | | him and moved to Chicago, where he had spent summers working as | 11 | | a grave digger; and
| 12 | | WHEREAS, Larry Hagen had a chance meeting with Rev. Dr. | 13 | | Martin Luther King Jr. in Chicago in 1963, which was a seminal | 14 | | experience for him and one that he never tired of retelling; he | 15 | | became very involved in the civil rights movement, even | 16 | | following Dr. King to the March on Washington; and
| 17 | | WHEREAS, Following his move to Chicago, Larry Hagen | 18 | | started working as a high school teacher at a Catholic school | 19 | | for girls; he took part in improv theater and worked as a | 20 | | probation officer for the juvenile court system; and
| 21 | | WHEREAS, Larry Hagen pursued a Master of Social Work at |

| 1 | | the University of Chicago, where he met Mary McGuirk, whom he | 2 | | married at the University of Chicago's Bond Chapel on | 3 | | September, 6, 1975; they moved to Oak Park in 1977 and had two | 4 | | daughters, Erica and Alyssa; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Following the birth of his first daughter in | 6 | | 1977, Larry Hagen attended night school at Chicago-Kent | 7 | | College of Law and then began his private legal practice; and
| 8 | | WHEREAS, Larry Hagen spent most of his legal career in | 9 | | immigration law and often took on difficult political asylum | 10 | | cases; he was able to obtain residency for many people fleeing | 11 | | from persecution in Africa, Eastern Europe, and elsewhere; | 12 | | despite his challenging career, he maintained his sense of | 13 | | humor and remained easygoing; and
| 14 | | WHEREAS, Post-retirement, Larry Hagen spent his time as a | 15 | | part-time lecturer in Cultural Diversity at Lewis University; | 16 | | and
| 17 | | WHEREAS, Larry Hagen was a proud resident of Oak Park, | 18 | | calling the village home for 45 years; he was a lifelong reader | 19 | | who was a member of Oak Park's longest-running book club; he | 20 | | also enjoyed singing at the St. Giles Family Mass as well as | 21 | | other choirs; and

| 1 | | WHEREAS, Larry Hagen loved telling stories from his life, | 2 | | the civil rights era, and Chicago's social and political | 3 | | history; he also loved genealogy and visited Norway and Sweden | 4 | | to meet his extended family; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Larry Hagen was always ready to be his daughters' | 6 | | cheerleader in their pursuits and embraced his role as | 7 | | grandfather when he welcomed the first of three grandchildren | 8 | | in 2013; and
| 9 | | WHEREAS, Larry Hagen was the husband of Mary (McGuirk) | 10 | | Hagen; the father of Erica (Mikel Maron) Hagen and Alyssa | 11 | | (Jonathan Sparling) Hagen; the grandfather of Ruby, River, and | 12 | | Luna; and the brother of Terry (Darlene) and Marilyn Revelli; | 13 | | therefore, be it
| 14 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL | 15 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | 16 | | Larry Hagen and extend our sincere condolences to his family, | 17 | | friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further
| 18 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 19 | | presented to the family of Larry Hagen as an expression of our | 20 | | deepest sympathy.
