AMENDMENT TO SENATE BILL 2354

2    AMENDMENT NO. ______. Amend Senate Bill 2354 by replacing
3everything after the enacting clause with the following:
 
4    "Section 1. Short title. This Act may be cited as the
5Science in Elementary Schools Task Force Act.
 
6    Section 5. Task force.
7    (a) The Science in Elementary Schools Task Force is
8established. The Task Force shall consist of the following
9members:
10        (1) 9 members, who shall be current or former science
11    or health teachers who teach in the grades K-8 appointed
12    by the Chair of the State Board of Higher Education. One
13    teacher shall come from each grade level between grade K
14    through 8;
15        (2) one member who is a medical doctor or doctor of
16    osteopathy or osteopathic medicine and who is appointed by

1    the Speaker of the House of Representatives;
2        (3) one member who is a medical doctor or doctor of
3    osteopathy or osteopathic medicine and who is appointed by
4    the President of the Senate;
5        (4) one member who is the parent or guardian of a child
6    in grade K through 8 and who is appointed by the Speaker of
7    the House of Representatives;
8        (5) one member who is the parent or guardian of a child
9    in grade K through 8 and who is appointed by the President
10    of the Senate;
11        (6) 2 members who are registered nurses,
12    chiropractors, exercise physiologists, or physical
13    therapists and who are appointed by the Minority Leader of
14    the House of Representatives; and
15        (7) 2 members who are registered nurses,
16    chiropractors, exercise physiologists, or physical
17    therapists and who are appointed by the Minority Leader of
18    the Senate.
19    (b) The Task Force shall identify age-appropriate
20education for anatomy, physiology, and nutrition for each
21grade K through 8. This education shall not replace current
22curriculum taught but shall complement
23and add to current science and health education in these
24grades. The additional curriculum that this Task Force will
25add to grade K through 8 science and health classes shall start
26with human-focused curriculum centered on the human body for

1grades K through 3 students. The additional curriculum shall
2be focused primarily on empowering students with the knowledge
3to understand adequately their own bodies and care for their
4own health and well-being throughout their lives. The
5curriculum will then move into more holistic science education
6that connects human-centered science education with other
7sciences.
8    (c) The State Board of Education shall provide staff and
9other assistance for the Task Force.
10    (d) The members of the Task Force shall serve without
11compensation.
12    (e) The Task Force shall meet a minimum of 6 times,
13starting on August 1, 2023. Meetings of the Task Force may take
14place in person, by video conference, or by telephone.
15    (f) By December 15, 2024, the Task Force shall produce a
16report for recommendations on K-8 grade anatomy, physiology,
17and nutrition and submit the report to the Governor, State
18Board of Education, and the General Assembly.
 
19    Section 90. Repealer. This Act is repealed on January 1,
202025.
 
21    Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon
22becoming law.".
