AMENDMENT TO SENATE BILL 686

2    AMENDMENT NO. ______. Amend Senate Bill 686 by replacing
3everything after the enacting clause with the following:
 
4    "Section 5. The Counties Code is amended by changing
5Section 4-7001 as follows:
 
6    (55 ILCS 5/4-7001)  (from Ch. 34, par. 4-7001)
7    Sec. 4-7001. Coroner's fees. The fees of the coroner's
8office shall be as follows:
9        1. For a copy of a transcript of sworn testimony:
10    $5.00 per page.
11        2. For a copy of an autopsy report (if not included in
12    transcript): $50.00.
13        3. For a copy of the verdict of a coroner's jury:
14    $5.00.
15        4. For a copy of a toxicology report: $25.00.
16        5. For a print of or an electronic file containing a

1    picture obtained by the coroner: actual cost or $3.00,
2    whichever is greater.
3        6. For each copy of miscellaneous reports, including
4    artist's drawings but not including police reports: actual
5    cost or $25.00, whichever is greater.
6        7. For a coroner's or medical examiner's permit to
7    cremate a dead human body: $50.00. The coroner may waive,
8    at his or her discretion, the permit fee if the coroner
9    determines that the person is indigent and unable to pay
10    the permit fee or under other special circumstances.
11        8. Except in a county with a population over
12    3,000,000, for a certified copy of a transcript of sworn
13    testimony of a coroner's inquest made by written request
14    declaring the request is for research or genealogy
15    purposes: $15.00 for the entire transcript. A request
16    shall be deemed a proper request for purpose of research
17    or genealogy if the requested inquest occurred not less
18    than 20 years prior to the date of the written request. The
19    transcript shall be stamped with the words "FOR GENEALOGY
20    OR RESEARCH PURPOSES ONLY".
21    All of which fees shall be certified by the court; in the
22case of inmates of any State charitable or penal institution,
23the fees shall be paid by the operating department or
24commission, out of the State Treasury. The coroner shall file
25his or her claim in probate for his or her fees and he or she
26shall render assistance to the State's attorney in the

1collection of such fees out of the estate of the deceased. In
2counties of less than 1,000,000 population, the State's
3attorney shall collect such fees out of the estate of the
4deceased.
5    Except in a county with a population over 3,000,000, the
6coroner may waive, at his or her discretion, any fees under
7this Section if the coroner determines that the person is
8indigent and unable to pay the fee or under other special
9circumstances as determined by the coroner.
10    Except as otherwise provided in this Section, whenever the
11coroner is required by law to perform any of the duties of the
12office of the sheriff, the coroner is entitled to the like fees
13and compensation as are allowed by law to the sheriff for the
14performance of similar services.
15    Except as otherwise provided in this Section, whenever the
16coroner of any county is required to travel in the performance
17of his or her duties, he or she shall receive the same mileage
18fees as are authorized for the sheriff of such county.
19    All fees under this Section collected by or on behalf of
20the coroner's office shall be paid over to the county
21treasurer and deposited into a special account in the county
22treasury. Moneys in the special account shall be used solely
23for the purchase of electronic and forensic identification
24equipment or other related supplies and the operating expenses
25of the coroner's office.
