| 2 | | WHEREAS, Mamie Till-Mobley was a courageous and powerful | 3 | | civil rights activist whose tragic loss of her son, Emmett | 4 | | Till, to racial violence in 1955 became a turning point for the | 5 | | civil rights movement; and
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Despite her unimaginable grief, Mamie Till-Mobley | 7 | | refused to remain silent, insisting on an open casket funeral | 8 | | for her son so the world could see the brutality of racism and | 9 | | the violence it could provoke; and
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Through her brave act of speaking out against the | 11 | | brutal lynching of her son, Mamie Till-Mobley exposed the | 12 | | violence and racism of the Jim Crow era; and
| 13 | | WHEREAS, Throughout her life, Mamie Till-Mobley continued | 14 | | to advocate for justice, working tirelessly to expose the | 15 | | evils of racism and to promote equality and fairness for all | 16 | | people; and
| 17 | | WHEREAS, Mamie Till-Mobley's legacy lives on today through | 18 | | the continued struggle for civil rights and social justice; | 19 | | and
| 20 | | WHEREAS, Mamie Till-Mobley was a remarkable woman, and it |

| 1 | | is important to honor her memory and to recognize the | 2 | | contributions she made to our nation and to the world; and
| 3 | | WHEREAS, On April 28, 2023, Mamie Till-Mobley and her son, | 4 | | Emmett Till, were honored at her alma mater, Argo Community | 5 | | High School, with the unveiling of the Mamie Till-Mobley and | 6 | | Emmett Till Memorial Walkway in Summit; therefore, be it
| 7 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | 8 | | HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | 9 | | we recognize the invaluable contributions of Mamie Till-Mobley | 10 | | to the cause of civil rights and social justice, and we honor | 11 | | her memory and legacy as a powerful force for positive change; | 12 | | and be it further
| 13 | | RESOLVED, That we pledge to continue Mamie Till-Mobley's | 14 | | work by standing against racism and prejudice and by working | 15 | | tirelessly to promote a more just and equitable society for | 16 | | all; and be it further | 17 | | RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be | 18 | | presented to the Mamie Till Mobley Memorial Foundation and | 19 | | Argo Community High School as a symbol of our respect and | 20 | | esteem.
