HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate the Village of River
4Grove in recognition of its 135 years of establishment; and
 
5    WHEREAS, In the 1829 Treaty of Prairie du Chien, Claude
6LaFramboise received land alongside the Des Plaines River,
7encompassing most of what in 1888 would become River Grove,
8the "Village of Friendly Neighbors"; and
 
9    WHEREAS, In 1833, LaFramboise sold the northern half of
10the land to his sister and the other to Jesse Walker, which is
11now the site of Triton College; and
 
12    WHEREAS, In 1834, Jesse Walker and his son-in-law, David
13Everett, erected a bridge crossing the Des Plaines River along
14an Indian trail that would become Grand Avenue, which was a
15stagecoach line used to take passengers from Chicago to
16Galena; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Through a century of progress, River Grove
18experienced a hotel being built for travelers, the naming of
19Turner Park, the construction of the Rhodes subdivision, the
20establishment of a school and churches, and the incorporation
21of additional areas into the village; and

1    WHEREAS, In 1964, Triton College was founded on River
2Grove's southern border; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Proud of the village's vast amount of verdure,
4River Grove is home to 350 acres of forest preserve, 290 acres
5of golf courses and cemeteries, 35 acres of public school
6property, and six acres of parkland; and
 
7    WHEREAS, River Grove is also home to Gene and Jude's and
8has been for over 70 years, and the restaurant consistently
9ranks as one of the top producers of Chicago-style hot dogs as
10well as the "Depression Dog"; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Originally the Italianate-style home of Frederick
12Dohrmann, the River Grove Historic House & Barn is now a museum
13to show how people lived in River Grove in the late 19th
14century, connecting River Grove residents and visitors with
15the village's past; and
 
16    WHEREAS, River Grove is rich with culture thanks to its
17German, Irish, Italian, Polish, and Latino residents, and the
18village connects every summer with River Front Fest at River
19Front Park; and
 
20    WHEREAS, River Grove will celebrate its 135 years as a

1village in 2023, marking an historic occasion and celebration
2for all residents; therefore, be it
 
3    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
4HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
5we congratulate the Village of River Grove in recognition of
6135 years of establishment; and be it further
 
7    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
8presented to Village President David B. Guerin, Village Clerk
9Marjorie A. Manchen, Trustee Lynn M. Bjorvik, Trustee
10Christopher J. Lilly, Trustee Michele M. Obaya, Trustee Robert
11C. Thomas, Trustee Lora M. Lantgen, and Trustee Benjamin E.
12Ramirez as an expression of our esteem and respect.
