| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened | 3 | | to learn of the death of Waino Feelis Akkala of Marquette, | 4 | | Michigan, who passed away on April 20, 2022; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Waino Akkala was born to Matt Feelis and Heidi | 6 | | Marie (Joensuu) Akkala in Marquette, Michigan on December 24, | 7 | | 1918; he graduated from Graveraet High School in Marquette in | 8 | | 1938 and took a position as a machinist with Lakeshore, Inc.; | 9 | | he joined the U.S. Navy on May 6, 1943 and was honorably | 10 | | discharged in November 1945; he served as a machinist with the | 11 | | Navy Seabees during World War II and participated in the | 12 | | battles of Leyte, of Luzon, and in the Marshall Islands; he | 13 | | received four stars for the American Theatre of Operations and | 14 | | Asiatic Pacific Theatre of Operations campaign citations, | 15 | | along with two stars for the Philippine Liberation campaign | 16 | | citation; he then returned to Marquette to be reunited with | 17 | | his wife, Olive, and his young daughter, Julie; and
| 18 | | WHEREAS, Waino Akkala resumed employment as a machinist | 19 | | with Lakeshore, Inc., where he worked with earnest dedication | 20 | | until his retirement in 1983; upon his retirement, he | 21 | | relocated to his farm in Big Bay, Michigan, where he devotedly | 22 | | restored a classic Ford Model A automobile to prime condition; | 23 | | and

| 1 | | WHEREAS, Waino Akkala was a member of the Community | 2 | | Presbyterian Church of Big Bay and the Negaunee VFW; and
| 3 | | WHEREAS, Waino Akkala was a talented woodworker who | 4 | | enjoyed carpentry and fishing; he also occasionally played his | 5 | | guitar for the enjoyment of friends and family; he will be | 6 | | remembered for his good, amicable nature; and
| 7 | | WHEREAS, Waino Akkala was preceded in death by his wives, | 8 | | Olive and Jane; his daughter, Julie Bartels; and his brothers, | 9 | | John and Walter; and
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Waino Akkala is survived by his son, William | 11 | | Akkala; his grandchildren, Julia, Lonnie, Steven, Jacqueline, | 12 | | and Jo Anna; and his five great-grandchildren; therefore, be | 13 | | it
| 14 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL | 15 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | 16 | | Waino Feelis Akkala and extend our sincere condolences to his | 17 | | family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | 18 | | further
