SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, An estimated 54 million Americans have
3osteoporosis or low bone mass; studies suggest that
4approximately one in two women and up to one in four men age 50
5and older will break a bone due to osteoporosis; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Osteoporosis-related bone fractures are
7responsible for more hospitalizations than heart attacks,
8strokes, or breast cancer; in a recent yearly total,
9approximately 1.8 million Medicare beneficiaries suffered
10approximately 2.1 million osteoporotic fractures; and
 
11    WHEREAS, In Illinois, 67,000 Medicare beneficiaries
12suffered over 79,500 osteoporotic fractures in 2016; and
 
13    WHEREAS, The cost for Illinois citizens who suffered an
14initial and subsequent fracture was estimated at over $261.9
15million; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Osteoporosis is often called a silent disease
17because one cannot feel bones weakening; a broken bone is
18often the first sign of osteoporosis; timely bone health
19screening, diagnosis, and treatment can help prevent fractures
20that can lead to hospitalizations and nursing home stays; and

1    WHEREAS, Cost-effective post fracture care, which improves
2care coordination, has been demonstrated to reduce the number
3of subsequent or repeat fractures yet is not widely available
4or properly incentivized by Medicare; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Osteoporosis and the broken bones it can cause
6are not a part of normal aging; building strong bones begins in
7childhood and is essential to the prevention of osteoporosis;
8care for our bones is vital throughout our lives, but we reach
9our peak bones mass by early adulthood; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Optimum bone health and prevention of
11osteoporosis can be maximized by a balanced diet rich in
12calcium and vitamin D, weight-bearing and muscle-strengthening
13exercise, and a healthy lifestyle with no smoking or no
14excessive alcohol intake; and
 
15    WHEREAS, We must raise awareness about bone health among
16the public, health professionals, and policymakers; therefore,
17be it
 
18    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL
19ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare May 2022 as
20Bone Health and Osteoporosis Month in the State of Illinois;
21and be it further

1    RESOLVED, That we appreciate the ideals, goals, and
2activities of the National Bone Health and Osteoporosis Month
3in May and encourage appropriate good health programs and
4activities that promote good bone health throughout the
5lifetime and prevent osteoporosis.
