SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of R. Emmett Fitzgerald, who passed away
4on January 17, 2021; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Emmett Fitzgerald was born in Alton to Daniel M.
6and Genevieve Degnan Fitzgerald on February 27, 1926; he
7attended St. Patrick's Grade School and Marquette Catholic
8High School in Alton; he served in the U.S. Navy during World
9War II from 1944 to 1946; he earned his bachelor's degree from
10the University of Notre Dame and his Juris Doctorate from the
11Notre Dame Law School; he married Joan Marie Garrow at Queen of
12Martyrs Catholic Church in Chicago on May 7, 1955, and she
13preceded him in death on February 13, 2011; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Emmett Fitzgerald began his legal career in
15Chicago as a law clerk for the late Justice Roger J. Kiley, who
16later served on the U.S. Court of Appeals in Chicago; he
17returned to Alton in 1953, where he became an associate at the
18law firm of Virley, Eastman and Schlafly, which later became
19Schlafly, Godfrey and Fitzgerald and still later became
20Hoagland, Fitzgerald, Smith and Pranaitis, for a total of 64
21years; and
 
22    WHEREAS, Emmett Fitzgerald belonged to a number of

1organizations, including the Alton Knights of Columbus, the
2American Legion, and the Alton-Wood River and Illinois State
3Bar Associations; he served on various boards, including St.
4Patrick's, St. Joseph's, St. Mary's, Marquette High School,
5Ursuline Convent, St. Anthony's Hospital, and the Alton
6Foundation; he also served on the Board of Directors of First
7National Bank, Mercantile Bank, and U.S. Bank in Alton; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Emmett Fitzgerald was preceded in death by his
9parents; his wife; and his siblings and their respective
10spouses, Daniel Jr., John (Helen), Genevieve (Harry) Kulp,
11Magalene, Edward (Marguerite), James (Katherine), Rosemary
12(James) Gilderslieve, and Margaret (James) Dimitroff; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Emmett Fitzgerald is survived by his children,
14Timothy (Kelly), Michael (Sue), Kathleen, Peter (Michelle),
15Daniel (Stephanie), and Maura (John) Sedlack; his
16grandchildren, Christopher Fitzgerald, Ryan Fitzgerald,
17Michael S. (Kelly) Fitzgerald, David (Catherine) Fitzgerald,
18Molly (Troy) Ferguson, Patrick (Laura) Fitzgerald, Joseph
19Fitzgerald, Maria and Jane Fitzgerald, Katherine, Daniel, and
20Mary Therese, and John E. Sedlack; and his nine
21great-grandchildren; therefore, be it
 
22    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL
23ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of

1R. Emmett Fitzgerald and extend our sincere condolences to his
2family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
3further
 
4    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
5presented to the family of Emmett Fitzgerald as an expression
6of our deepest sympathy.
