1 HOUSE RESOLUTION

2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives wish to commemorate the contribution Mark
4 Aguirre has made to Illinois basketball; and

5     WHEREAS, Mark Aguirre was born in Chicago on December 10,
6 1959; and

7     WHEREAS, Mark Aguirre attended George Westinghouse College
8 Prep in Chicago, becoming a Third-team Parade All-American and
9 McDonald's All-American; he was named Mr. Basketball USA in
10 1978 by Ballislife.com; and

11     WHEREAS, Mark Aguirre attended DePaul University in
12 Chicago; he led the Blue Devils to three consecutive NCAA
13 Tournament appearances and was named the Naismith College
14 Player of the Year and awarded the Adolph Rupp Trophy; and

15     WHEREAS, Mark Aguirre earned a number of honors while
16 playing at DePaul University, including being named a two-time
17 consensus first-team All-American, Sporting News College
18 Basketball Player of the Year, UPI College Basketball Player
19 of the Year, and AP College Basketball Player of the Year and
20 receiving the USBWA Oscar Robertson Trophy during his time
21 with the Blue Devils, which led to his number being retired and

1 his induction into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of
2 Fame; and

3     WHEREAS, Mark Aguirre was part of the 1980 U.S. Olympic
4 Basketball Team and received a Congressional Gold Medal; and

5     WHEREAS, Mark Aguirre was drafted first overall in the
6 1981 NBA Draft by the Dallas Mavericks; and

7     WHEREAS, Mark Aguirre played in the NBA for 13 seasons,
8 winning two NBA Championships and earning selection to the NBA
9 All-Star Team three times; and

10     WHEREAS, Mark Aguirre coached in the NBA for six seasons;
11 therefore, be it

12     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
13 HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
14 we declare November 8, 2021 as "Mark Aguirre Day" in the State
15 of Illinois to recognize his achievements and applaud the
16 contributions he made to basketball in Illinois; and be it
17 further

18     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
19 presented to Mark Aguirre as a symbol of our respect and
20 esteem.
