| 1 | | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | 3 | | Representatives wish to congratulate the City of Hoopeston on | 4 | | the occasion of its 150th anniversary; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Hoopeston was founded in northern Vermilion | 6 | | County in July 1871 at the crossroads of two railroads, which | 7 | | were the Chicago, Danville, and Vincennes Railroad, known | 8 | | today as the C&EI, and the now-defunct Lafayette, Bloomington, | 9 | | and Western Railroads; and
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Hoopeston was named after Thomas Hoopes, who | 11 | | donated the land on which the railroads were built; by 1872, it | 12 | | had grown to 70 buildings and a population of 245; and | 13 | | WHEREAS, Hoopeston has had a proud history in the | 14 | | agricultural business and in manufacturing, and the city still | 15 | | possesses a canning factory and a can manufacturing factory; | 16 | | and
| 17 | | WHEREAS, Hoopeston was once known as the sweet corn | 18 | | capital of the world; paying tribute to this tradition, it | 19 | | hosts the National Sweetcorn Festival every Labor Day weekend; | 20 | | in conjunction with the festival, it hosts the National | 21 | | Sweetheart Pageant, which brings contestants to Hoopeston from |

| 1 | | across the United States; and
| 2 | | WHEREAS, Hoopeston's sweet corn legacy is further honored | 3 | | by the Hoopeston Area School District's nickname being the | 4 | | Cornjerkers, which first emerged in the 1920s and has earned | 5 | | the school district nationwide honors as one of the most | 6 | | unique high school mascots; and
| 7 | | WHEREAS, Hoopeston is an ever evolving city and is adding | 8 | | unique stores, re-establishing some of its historic buildings | 9 | | into viable business options, and continuing to add different | 10 | | types of businesses in the health field; and
| 11 | | WHEREAS, To celebrate its sesquicentennial anniversary, | 12 | | Hoopeston is holding a number of events and activities | 13 | | starting at the end of May and culminating in a week-long | 14 | | celebration from June 27 to July 3, 2021; therefore, be it
| 15 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | 16 | | HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | 17 | | we congratulate the City of Hoopeston on its 150th | 18 | | anniversary; and be it further
| 19 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 20 | | presented to Hoopeston Mayor Bill Crusinberry as an expression | 21 | | of our esteem and respect.
