| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | 3 | | learn of the death of Kenneth Eldon Andersen Ph.D. of | 4 | | Champaign, who passed away on January 26, 2020; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Kenneth Andersen was born in Iowa to Mads Ingvard | 6 | | (Edward) Andersen and Anna Christiansen Andersen; he was the | 7 | | youngest of five children; he graduated from Harlan High School | 8 | | in Harlan, Iowa in 1951; he earned his bachelor's degree and | 9 | | master's degree from Iowa State Teachers College, now the | 10 | | University of Northern Iowa; he served two years in the U.S. | 11 | | Army as an education specialist and part-time instructor for | 12 | | New Mexico State University on the White Sands Proving Ground; | 13 | | he earned his Ph.D. in communication from the University of | 14 | | Wisconsin-Madison in 1961; and
| 15 | | WHEREAS, Kenneth Andersen briefly served as a visiting | 16 | | professor at the University of Illinois-Chicago and the | 17 | | University of Southern California; he then taught at the | 18 | | University of Michigan-Ann Arbor; he relocated to the | 19 | | University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana in 1970; he retired | 20 | | as professor emeritus of communication from the University of | 21 | | Illinois in 1995; he authored books on persuasion and | 22 | | introductory communication and co-authored a book of original | 23 | | essays and selected journal articles; and

| 1 | | WHEREAS, During his career, Kenneth Andersen served in a | 2 | | number of roles outside the classroom; he was a debate coach at | 3 | | Iowa State Teachers College, the University of Wisconsin, and | 4 | | the University of Michigan; at the University of Illinois, he | 5 | | served as associate dean for the College of Liberal Arts & | 6 | | Sciences, interim head of Speech Communication, interim head of | 7 | | Speech and Hearing Science, and deputy vice chancellor of | 8 | | Academic Affairs; he also served numerous roles in the | 9 | | University Senate, including three years as chair, three terms | 10 | | as a member of the University Senates' Conference, and as | 11 | | Senate parliamentarian for numerous chancellors; and
| 12 | | WHEREAS, Kenneth Andersen was active in a number of | 13 | | organizations and associations, such as the American | 14 | | Association of University Professors (AAUP) as a local chapter | 15 | | member and president, state conference president, treasurer, | 16 | | and newsletter editor and editorial writer; he was a chapter | 17 | | and often conference delegate to more than 30 national AAUP | 18 | | conventions, chairing three national committees and serving a | 19 | | term on the national conference; he served and held leadership | 20 | | roles in the National Communication Association, the Central | 21 | | States Communication Association, and the National Association | 22 | | of Communication Administrators; and
| 23 | | WHEREAS, Kenneth Andersen believed his greatest enduring |

| 1 | | contribution to the field of communication was when he served | 2 | | as the conference planner and keynote speaker at the National | 3 | | Communication Association's 1999 summer conference where he | 4 | | was instrumental in the formulation of the Credo for Ethical | 5 | | Communication, which was later adopted by the association; and
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Kenneth Andersen received a number of awards and | 7 | | accolades during his career, including the Association of State | 8 | | Conferences' Tracey Award and National Communication | 9 | | Association's Distinguished Service Award for his efforts; and
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Kenneth Andersen developed an interest in | 11 | | classical music and theater from a young age; he enjoyed live | 12 | | musical theater and Broadway musicals; he supported and | 13 | | sponsored the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts as a | 14 | | member of the Colwell Society, then the Foellinger Society; he | 15 | | was a season subscriber to the Lyric Opera of Chicago for over | 16 | | 20 years and to the San Francisco Opera for over a decade; and
| 17 | | WHEREAS, Kenneth Andersen was preceded in death by his | 18 | | three sisters and one brother; and
| 19 | | WHEREAS, Kenneth Andersen is survived by his wife, Mary; | 20 | | his son, Erik (Susan); and his grandchildren, Nickolas, Megan, | 21 | | and Alyssa; therefore, be it

| 1 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL | 2 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | 3 | | Kenneth Eldon Andersen Ph.D. and extend our sincere condolences | 4 | | to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be | 5 | | it further
| 6 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 7 | | presented to the family of Kenneth Andersen as an expression of | 8 | | our deepest sympathy.
