| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | 3 | | learn of the death of Gloria Anne Kittell Hannas on December | 4 | | 18, 2018 at the age of 91; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Gloria Hannas was born on May 22, 1927 in Newark, | 6 | | New Jersey to Noel E. and Virgiline Kittell; and
| 7 | | WHEREAS, Gloria Hannas graduated from Woodbridge High | 8 | | School and attended Indiana University, where she graduated | 9 | | with a B.A. in 1949; she worked for J. Walter Thompson and | 10 | | earned her M.A. at Northwestern University in 1972; she earned | 11 | | a teacher's certificate and began a 20-year career as a high | 12 | | school French teacher at Riverside Brookfield High School, | 13 | | Thornton Township, and later Thornwood High School; during her | 14 | | retirement, she became a private French consultant and tutor | 15 | | for students and for adults going abroad; she was also a | 16 | | passionate volunteer advocate for people she felt were in need | 17 | | of support and freedom; and
| 18 | | WHEREAS, In 1950, Gloria Hannas married Warren F. Hannas | 19 | | and lived in La Grange for 60 years; and | 20 | | WHEREAS, Gloria Hannas served as a commissioner from First | 21 | | Presbyterian Church of La Grange at the meetings of the Chicago |

| 1 | | Presbytery; she worked with the Chicago Presbytery's Middle | 2 | | East Task Force and Peacemaking Mission Team and advocated for | 3 | | justice in Central and South America; and | 4 | | WHEREAS, Gloria Hannas was a progressive who spoke out for | 5 | | social justice and world peace and was greatly admired for her | 6 | | dedication, enthusiasm, and willingness to work for peace and | 7 | | justice; she received a Humanitarian Award from the La Grange | 8 | | NAACP; and | 9 | | WHEREAS, Gloria Hannas moved to Oak Park to an apartment in | 10 | | the Oak Park Arms in 2010 to live in a community where | 11 | | integrated housing was desired and where people practiced | 12 | | inclusion; she was active with the Oak Park Arms' Readers | 13 | | Theater and its book club; and | 14 | | WHEREAS, Gloria Hannas became an active member of First | 15 | | United Church of Oak Park, where she attended Sunday morning | 16 | | adult education seminars and weekly Bible studies on a variety | 17 | | of topics; she was on the church's Faith in Action Committee; | 18 | | in addition, she tutored elementary children as part of her | 19 | | church's Cluster tutoring program for inner city youth; and | 20 | | WHEREAS, Once she needed assistance, Gloria Hannas moved to | 21 | | Overland Park, Kansas to be near family in 2017; she faithfully | 22 | | attended Village Presbyterian Church as long as she was able; |

| 2 | | WHEREAS, Gloria Hannas loved cats her entire life and had | 3 | | the pleasure of having two snowshoe cats, Lili and Sasha most | 4 | | recently, and Minou before them; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Gloria Hannas is survived by her children, Barbara | 6 | | (Hannas) Johnson and Stuart Hannas; her grandchildren, Sarah | 7 | | Payne and Chris Payne; her great-grandchildren; her niece, | 8 | | Cindy (Hannas) D'Esterre; and her nephews, Scott Hannas, Steve | 9 | | Hannas, and Craig Hannas; therefore, be it
| 10 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL | 11 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | 12 | | Gloria Anne Kittell Hannas and extend our sincere condolences | 13 | | to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be | 14 | | it further
| 15 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 16 | | presented to the family of Gloria Hannas as an expression of | 17 | | our deepest sympathy.
