SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Hector Edelmiro Colon of Moline, who
4passed away on May 13, 2018; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Hector Colon was born at home in the mountain town
6of Penuelas, Puerto Rico to Edelmiro Colon and Carmen Colon
7Lugo on April 10, 1940; he moved to Chicago with his family in
81950 and graduated from the University of Illinois-Chicago; he
9graduated from Officer Candidate School at Ft. Benning, Georgia
10and went on to proudly serve in Vietnam; in January 5, 1968,
11his platoon of 32 men came under attack; he led his men in a
12battle, during which seven were killed and many were wounded;
13for his bravery and dedication to duty, he received the
14Distinguished Service Cross, the United States Army's
15second-highest award for valor; he married Margaret Clark in
16Honolulu, Hawaii, on March 1, 1968; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Upon returning to civilian life, Hector Colon
18began a 35-year career of government service; he retired from
19the Rock Island Arsenal in 2005; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Hector Colon was inducted into the Officer
21Candidate School Hall of Fame on May 8, 2017; and

1    WHEREAS, Hector Colon enjoyed dancing, golfing and
2bowling, along with listening to his collection of hundreds of
3Spanish LPs and CDs; for many years, he hosted a Sunday
4afternoon radio show featuring his "oldies" on KALA, St.
5Ambrose College; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Hector Colon is survived by his wife, Margaret;
7his sons, Michael and David; his grandson, Sam; his brother,
8Javiel (Nina); his sister-in-law, Almeda (Rene) Arcos; his
9niece, Joanne (Patrick) McKay; his nephew, Nikolay Arcos; and
10his many cousins in Puerto Rico, including his "prima hermana,"
11Keiri Fornes-Lugo; therefore, be it
 
12    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
13ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
14Hector Edelmiro Colon and extend our sincere condolences to his
15family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
16further
 
17    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18presented to the family of Hector Colon as an expression of our
19deepest sympathy.
