SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Mary Marling, who passed away on October
412, 2017 at the age of 80; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Mary Marling was born in Detroit, Michigan to
6Lewis and Virginia Tower on April 17, 1937; she graduated from
7Grosse Pointe High School and earned a Bachelor of Arts in
8Economics from the University of Michigan and a Master of Arts
9in Russian Studies from New York University; she was deeply
10committed to her family, her community, and the Unity Temple
11Unitarian Universalist Congregation; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Mary Marling was an avid sports fan cheering
13loudest for the Detroit Tigers, University of Michigan
14football, the Detroit Red Wings, and later, the Chicago Cubs;
15she was deeply superstitious about sports and believed that
16ironing during games brought victory to her beloved Tigers; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Mary Marling had an "I can make that" attitude and
18tackled many craft projects such as quilting and knitting; she
19later became an excellent bridge player and converted to online
20matches in recent years; she was a true music lover and played
21classical piano; and

1    WHEREAS, Mary Marling recently celebrated 38 years of
2sobriety and was a firm believer in the power of Alcoholics
3Anonymous; she supported many in joining "The Club" and wanted
4to assure people that they were not alone; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Mary Marling's final job was as the bookkeeper for
6the local non-profit Ten Thousand Villages fair trade shop,
7where she was able to combine her interest of orderly numbers
8and doing good; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Mary Marling's friends would describe her as an
10optimist, curious and playful, and someone who lived life on
11her own terms; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Mary Marling was an extrovert who thrived when
13surrounded by people; she also smiled and loved completely; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Mary Marling was preceded in death by her parents;
15and
 
16    WHEREAS, Mary Marling is survived by her daughters,
17Jennifer Marling and Carrie Bankes; her grandchildren, Julia,
18Abby, and Will Bankes, who knew her as "Bama"; her son-in-law,
19Steve Bankes; her brother, John Tower (Susan); her sister, Sue
20Conklin (Robert); and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and good
21friends; therefore, be it

1    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
2ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
3Mary Marling, and extend our sincere condolences to her family,
4friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further
 
5    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
6presented to the family of Mary Marling as an expression of our
7deepest sympathy.
