SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Dr. Jean A. Bowen, who passed away on
4September 16, 2017; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Dr. Bowen was born in Joliet to John and Helen
6(Olson) Gerber on February 11, 1942; she grew up in Fairbury
7and graduated from Fairbury-Cropsey High School; she received a
8Bachelor of Arts from Millikin University, a Master of Arts
9from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and a
10Doctorate of Education from Loyola University; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Dr. Bowen began her career in education at Johns
12Hill Junior High School in Decatur; she then was a guidance
13counselor at Centennial High School in Champaign; she moved to
14Elgin and taught at Abbott Junior High School; she was a
15guidance counselor, assistant principal, and head of the Fine
16Arts Academy at Larkin High School; finally, she was the first
17principal of South Elgin High School; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Dr. Bowen was member of the Delta Delta Delta
19sorority, the Elgin Junior Women's Club, and the Elgin Service
20Board; she was on the board of the Community Crisis Center, the
21board of the Elgin Sports Hall of Fame, and the board of the
22U-46 Educational Foundation; she was a longtime member of

1Wesley United Methodist Church in Elgin, where she was part of
2the choir and served in many capacities; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Dr. Bowen was preceded in death by her parents;
4and
 
5    WHEREAS, Dr. Bowen is survived by her husband of 53 years,
6Gary: her sons, John T. (Jori) and David A. (Christine): her
7grandchildren, Camille, Drew, and Keira; her sister, Janet
8(Tom) Mann; her brothers, John Gerber and Paul (Sharon) Gerber;
9and many nephews and nieces; therefore, be it
 
10    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
11ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
12Dr. Jean A. Bowen, and extend our sincere condolences to her
13family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it
14further
 
15    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16presented to the family of Dr. Bowen as an expression of our
17deepest sympathy.
