SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Dyslexia is a language-based learning disability
3and the most common cause of reading, writing, and spelling
4difficulties; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Dyslexia affects 70%-80% of people with reading
6difficulties and is more common than autism, attention deficit
7disorder, and attention deficit hyperactive disorder; and
 
8    WHEREAS, At least 2 million people in Illinois show
9symptoms of dyslexia; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Dyslexia is a neurological and genetic disorder,
11affecting all ethnicities and socio-economic statuses equally;
12and
 
13    WHEREAS, Students with dyslexia face difficulty learning
14to read and, if left undiagnosed, often become frustrated with
15academic study; and
 
16    WHEREAS, With the help of intervention before 1st grade,
17students with dyslexia can learn to read and write at grade
18level; and
 
19    WHEREAS, If children with dyslexia are poor readers in 3rd

1grade, they will likely remain poor readers into their adult
2lives; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Globally, great strides have been made to raise
4awareness about dyslexia to promote early diagnosis, including
5the designation of October as National Dyslexia Awareness Month
6in the United States of America; therefore, be it
 
7    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
8ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
9CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate the last week of October
10in 2017 as Dyslexia Awareness Week in the State of Illinois;
11and be it further
 
12    RESOLVED, That we recognize the importance of improving
13awareness and encouraging early diagnosis of dyslexia; and be
14it further
 
15    RESOLVED, That we wholeheartedly support a State,
16national, and global commitment to improving the reading
17abilities of children and adults who struggle with dyslexia.
