| 2 | | WHEREAS, The Granite City Works steel mill has operated | 3 | | since 1878; it was originally founded by brothers
William and | 4 | | Frederick Niedringhaus as the Granite Iron Rolling Mills, and | 5 | | most recently, owned by United
States Steel Corporation; and
| 6 | | WHEREAS, The Granite City Works has been an industry leader | 7 | | in sheet steel products for customers in
the construction, | 8 | | container, piping and tubing, service center, and automotive | 9 | | industries; and
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Granite City Works has an annual raw steelmaking | 11 | | capability of 2.8 million net tons; and | 12 | | WHEREAS, Global influences in the market such as reduced | 13 | | steel prices, unfair trade practices, imports,
and fluctuating | 14 | | oil prices, continue to have a dramatic negative impact on the | 15 | | steel production industry; and
| 16 | | WHEREAS, Domestic steelmakers continue to lose substantial | 17 | | sales to foreign countries, particularly
China and South Korea, | 18 | | which have "dumped" their steel products into the United States | 19 | | market at
prices below fair market value; and
| 20 | | WHEREAS, Due to these disruptions in the steel market, on |

| 1 | | March 25, 2015, United States Steel
Corporation announced that | 2 | | it will temporarily idle the Granite City mill and lay off | 3 | | 2,080 steel workers
by or after May 28, 2015; and
| 4 | | WHEREAS, Granite City Works is a vital part of the | 5 | | Metro-East economy, and the loss of this mill would
be | 6 | | devastating to thousands of families and the financial | 7 | | well-being of the entire region; therefore, be it
| 8 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL | 9 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we urge the President | 10 | | of the United States and Congress to review the national tariff | 11 | | policy on steel
goods and take action similar to the 2002 | 12 | | actions of President George W. Bush and Congress; and be it | 13 | | further | 14 | | RESOLVED, That we urge the President of the United States | 15 | | and Congress to consider all possible trade
and economic | 16 | | policies to protect this vital American industry and minimize | 17 | | the financial impact on these
hardworking men and women; and be | 18 | | it further
| 19 | | RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be | 20 | | presented to the President and Vice-President of
the United | 21 | | States, the Majority and Minority Leaders of the United States | 22 | | Senate, and the Speaker and
Minority Leader of the United |
