WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
Representatives wish to recognize the Canaan A.M.W. Church in
Maywood on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of its
WHEREAS, On March 20, 1905, the Canaan A.M.E. Mission
Church was organized in Oak Park under the leadership of Rev.
Thomas Pain Devlin; the first chartered members were Brother
Shannon; Sister Heady and Brother James Devlin;
Brother Tom Hensely; Sister Fannie Lee; Sister
Brother Winford Wilson; Sister Janie Wilson; Sister Colvin;
Sister Mary Wilson Dobbs; and
Sister Fannie Stuart; and
WHEREAS, In 1910, the A.M.E. Mission church was organized
in Maywood under the leadership of Rev. Thomas Lovett; the
first chartered members were Sister Elizabeth and Brother
Priestly; Sister Maude Priestly Stump; Sister Mary
Sheridan; Brother A.L. Rayford; Sister Fannie D.
Florence May and Brother Joseph Logan; and Sister Fannie Lee;
WHEREAS, The 2 churches consolidated their respective
congregations in 1914 and chose the name Canaan A.M.E. Church;

WHEREAS, The first choir was organized in 1912 and the
first parsonage was built in 1923; the sanctuary was erected in
WHEREAS, The church expanded numerous times throughout the
years due to significant increases in membership; and
WHEREAS, Other pastors to serve the church throughout the
years were Rev. James Woods, Rev. W.B. Lowery, Rev. W.H.
Thomasson, Rev. T.J. Merritt, Rev. D.H. Byrd, Rev. G.I. Holt,
Rev. W.B. Barber, Rev. S.E. Malone, Rev. S.B. Washington, Rev.
J.C. Brewer, Rev. Maurice Higginbothan, Rev. J.W. James, Rev.
Granville Reed, Rev. J. Edward Foster, Rev. W.N. Reed, Rev.
Charles I. Spivey, Rev. Fred D. Ford, Rev. Blaine Ramsey, Rev.
Isaac Kindred, and Rev. Robert L. Bailey; and
WHEREAS, The current pastor, Rev. C. Calvin Rice, joined
the church in time to see it through its 100th anniversary and
into the future; therefore, be it
RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
recognize the 100th anniversary of the Canaan A.M.W. Church,
and we wish it many more successful years; and be it further
