AMENDMENT TO SENATE BILL 2277

2     AMENDMENT NO. ______. Amend Senate Bill 2277 by replacing
3 everything after the enacting clause with the following:
 
4     "Section 5. The School Code is amended by adding Section
5 2-3.148 as follows:
 
6     (105 ILCS 5/2-3.148 new)
7     (Section scheduled to be repealed on January 16, 2013)
8     Sec. 2-3.148. Textbook digital technology; pilot program.
9     (a) The General Assembly makes the following findings:
10         (1) The use of digital technologies in the kindergarten
11     through grade 12 school environment is rapidly increasing
12     in this State.
13         (2) There is a need for the State Board of Education to
14     explore the expanded use of digital technologies in
15     classrooms and the impact of technological innovation on
16     both educational achievement and textbook weight.

1     (b) The State Board of Education shall implement a pilot
2 program, subject to appropriation, to test digital
3 technologies in 3 geographically diverse school districts on or
4 before July 1, 2011. The pilot program shall examine the
5 following issues:
6         (1) the development of alternative textbook formats,
7     including various digital formats; and
8         (2) any possible adaptation of existing standard print
9     textbooks that would be beneficial to the health and
10     educational achievement of pupils in this State.
11     (c) The State Board of Education shall report the results
12 of its findings on the pilot program and make recommendations
13 to the Governor and the General Assembly on or before January
14 15, 2013 with regard to the success of digital technologies
15 used in the pilot program. The State Board of Education may
16 submit other reports as it deems appropriate.
17     (d) The pilot program is abolished on January 16, 2013.
18 This Section is repealed on January 16, 2013.
 
19     Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon
20 becoming law.".
