SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths
3 in both men and women in Illinois, the United States, and the
4 world, this year killing more Americans than breast, prostate,
5 and colon cancer combined; and
 
6     WHEREAS, There were an estimated 173,000 new cases of lung
7 cancer and an estimate 428 deaths from lung cancer each day in
8 the United States; and
 
9     WHEREAS, There will be an estimated 7,290 new cases of lung
10 cancer in Illinois this year, and there will be an estimated
11 6,790 deaths from lung cancer this year; and
 
12     WHEREAS, Smoking is the number one cause of lung cancer,
13 yet former smokers and persons who have never smoked comprise
14 60% of the majority of new cases of lung cancer each year; and
 
15     WHEREAS, Other causes of lung cancer are exposure to
16 cancer-causing substances or carcinogens, such as asbestos,
17 radon, uranium, arsenic, and certain petroleum products; and
 
18     WHEREAS, In the early stages of lung cancer, symptoms are
19 usually not apparent, however, when symptoms occur, the cancer
20 is often advanced; and

1     WHEREAS, Symptoms of lung cancer include chronic cough,
2 hoarseness, coughing up blood, weight loss and loss of
3 appetite, shortness of breath, fever without a known reason,
4 wheezing, repeated bouts of bronchitis or pneumonia and chest
5 pain; and
 
6     WHEREAS, There is currently no standard screening for lung
7 cancer; and
 
8     WHEREAS, Funding for lung cancer medical research falls far
9 short of that for other less fatal diseases; and
 
10     WHEREAS, To help build awareness and save lives, the Lung
11 Cancer Alliance, a national patient advocacy group for lung
12 cancer dedicated to helping build awareness of this disease,
13 has proclaimed November as Lung Cancer Awareness Month; and
 
14     WHEREAS, It is only fitting and proper for the State of
15 Illinois to join the nation in designating November as "Lung
16 Cancer Awareness Month" so that through better education, more
17 cases of lung cancer may be found in the early stage, when the
18 chances of long-term survival are as high as 85 percent;
19 therefore, be it
 
20     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL

1 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
2 CONCURRING HEREIN, that the month of November annually be
3 designated "Lung Cancer Awareness Month" in the State of
4 Illinois; and be it further
 
5     RESOLVED, That the Governor is requested to issue a
6 proclamation calling upon the public officials and the citizens
7 of Illinois to observe the month with appropriate activities
8 and programs annually; and be it further
 
9     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
10 delivered to Governor Rod Blagojevich.
