HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The State of Illinois recognizes that the City of
3 Chicago is the United States flagship city for Earth Hour, an
4 initiative of the World Wildlife Fund dedicated to showing that
5 together we can all make a change in global warming by reducing
6 our electric use for one hour; and
 
7     WHEREAS, Earth Hour is an event in which the entire State
8 can participate; and
 
9     WHEREAS, Iconic buildings in Chicago including the Sears
10 Tower, Wrigley Field, the Merchandise Mart, and the John
11 Hancock Building, as well as businesses and residences around
12 the State, from Aurora to Worth, are participating in Earth
13 Hour; and
 
14     WHEREAS, Climate change is perhaps the most significant
15 issue facing our planet today, and the need to respond is
16 unsurpassed; average annual carbon emissions in the United
17 States alone measure 19.6 tons per person; and
 
18     WHEREAS, The Earth is beginning to witness dramatic
19 impacts, from melting glaciers to increased intensity and
20 frequency of hurricanes, as a result of the amount of carbon we
21 load into the atmosphere; therefore the way we live and behave

1 must change if global warming is to be slowed or stopped; and
 
2     WHEREAS, Earth Hour shows that together, each small action
3 taken collectively can make a difference in the fight against
4 global warming; and
 
5     WHEREAS, On March 29, 2008, from 8:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.,
6 every person can show his or her commitment to the fight
7 against global warming by turning out non-essential lighting;
8 therefore, be it
 
9     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
10 NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
11 declare March 29, 2008 as Earth Hour Day in the State of
12 Illinois and urge all residents to participate in Earth Hour
13 and implement changes throughout the year to reduce carbon
14 output and global warming.
