HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to honor the Puerto Rican Parade Committee of Chicago for the outstanding work it has performed for the Puerto Rican community in the City of Chicago for over 40 years; and

WHEREAS, The mission of La Casa Puertorriquena, which translates to The Puerto Rican House, is to make the house a home to Humboldt Park and other Latino communities in Chicago and to establish the Puerto Rican Parade Committee of Chicago as a voice for Puerto Ricans, instilling community empowerment, and encouraging Puerto Ricans to positively represent and preserve their cultural roots, not only in Chicago but throughout the Midwest; and

WHEREAS, Beginning with the Puerto Rican Parade in 1965 and rounding up with the six day long Fiestas Puertorriquenas, the Puerto Rican Parade Committee of Chicago has brought the Puerto Rican presence to the forefront of Chicago through music, dance, and food; more than cultural pride, these events began and continue today to bring historical awareness, community unity, and Latino empowerment to the Puerto Rican community; and

WHEREAS, The Puerto Rican Parade Committee of Chicago's annual Fiestas Puertorriquenas festival was first implemented in 1982; it is the second largest outdoor festival in Chicago; the festival attracts over 1,500,000 potential customers; and

WHEREAS, On June 16th, 2007, President Miguel "Mickie" Sanchez and the Puerto Rican Parade Committee of Chicago will hold its 42nd Annual Puerto Rican Parade; the 26th Annual Fiestas Puertorriquenas festival will be held from June 12-17, 2007; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we honor the Puerto Rican Parade Committee of Chicago for its continuing dedication and service to the Puerto Rican community in Chicago and wish the committee continued success in its future endeavors; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Puerto Rican Parade Committee of Chicago President Miguel Sanchez as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
