SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
10 ILCS 5/29-12.5 new

    Amends the Election Code. Prohibits county clerks and members of boards of election commissioners from making public endorsements of candidates and public questions on ballots solely of political subdivisions within their election jurisdiction. Effective immediately.

1     AN ACT concerning election officials.
 
2     Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3 represented in the General Assembly:
 
4     Section 5. The Election Code is amended by adding Section
5 29-12.5 as follows:
 
6     (10 ILCS 5/29-12.5 new)
7     Sec. 29-12.5. Political endorsements by election
8 officials. No county clerk or member of a board of election
9 commissioners may publicly endorse any candidate for a public
10 office or any public question appearing on ballots solely in
11 political subdivisions within the jurisdiction of that
12 election authority and not elsewhere in the State. This
13 prohibition includes but is not limited to print and broadcast
14 endorsements.
 
15     Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon
16 becoming law.
