| SENATE RESOLUTION
| 2 |
| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | 3 |
| learn of the death of Joseph B. McGuan, who passed away in | 4 |
| April of 2006; and
| 5 |
| WHEREAS, Joseph B. McGuan was born October 19, 1944 in | 6 |
| Morris, Illinois; his parents were Bernard E. and Elzena | 7 |
| Fordyce McGuan; he attended St. Bede Academy in Peru, Illinois, | 8 |
| as a boarding student until his graduation in 1962; and | 9 |
| WHEREAS, After graduation, he returned to Morris to work on | 10 |
| the family farm and was also employed at the Caterpillar | 11 |
| Tractor Company in Joliet; and
| 12 |
| WHEREAS, In June of 1963, Joseph McGuan enlisted in the | 13 |
| United States Marine Corps under the delayed entry program; he | 14 |
| reported to the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, | 15 |
| California in October of 1963; he graduated boot camp on | 16 |
| January 8, 1964 with Second Battalion, Platoon 281; he went on | 17 |
| to proudly serve his country in the Vietnam War; and
| 18 |
| WHEREAS, After returning to the United States, Joseph | 19 |
| McGuan attended Drill Instructors School at the Marine Corps | 20 |
| Recruit Depot at Parris Island, South Carolina; he worked as a | 21 |
| drill instructor at Parris Island until his release from active | 22 |
| duty in 1967; on June 26, 1969, he received his honorable | 23 |
| discharge from the Marine Corps; and
| 24 |
| WHEREAS, Joseph McGuan returned to work on the family farm, | 25 |
| and completed his apprenticeship with the International Union | 26 |
| of Operating Engineers; and | 27 |
| WHEREAS, Joseph McGuan was a lifetime member of the | 28 |
| Immaculate Conception Church in Morris, and he worked as a | 29 |
| volunteer coach for the Catholic Youth Football team of |

| Immaculate Conception School from 1977 to 1983; and
| 2 |
| WHEREAS, In 1992, while working at the Chrysler Plant in | 3 |
| Belvidere, he met a Marine who introduced him to the Marine | 4 |
| Corps League; he decided to see if there was enough interest in | 5 |
| forming a detachment of the Marine Corps League in DeKalb | 6 |
| County; and | 7 |
| WHEREAS, He contacted Marines throughout the county and | 8 |
| held several meetings before the DeKalb County Marines | 9 |
| Detachment #847-Marine Corps League received their charter in | 10 |
| April of 1993; he was a life member of the Marine Corps League | 11 |
| and the DeKalb County Chapter of VietNow; he was a member of | 12 |
| the Military Order of Devil Dogs, the Catholic War Veterans, | 13 |
| the Third Marine Division Association, the Northern Illinois | 14 |
| Veterans Activities Committee, the Veterans of Foreign Wars | 15 |
| Post #8387, and the Illinois Vietnam Veterans Memorial Vigil | 16 |
| Committee (Springfield); he had served as the Chairman of the | 17 |
| Department of Illinois POW/MIA Committee and the Chairman of | 18 |
| the National POW/MIA Committee; and | 19 |
| WHEREAS, Joseph McGuan was the loving husband of Renee and | 20 |
| the loving father of Jeff and Shawn; therefore, be it
| 21 |
| RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL | 22 |
| ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with | 23 |
| his family, friends, and fellow Marines, the passing of Joseph | 24 |
| B. McGuan; and be it further
| 25 |
| RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 26 |
| presented to the family of Joseph McGuan.
