SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
625 ILCS 5/3-623   from Ch. 95 1/2, par. 3-623

    Amends the Illinois Vehicle Code. Provides that an Illinois resident who is the surviving spouse of a person killed in a foreign war and awarded the Purple Heart by a branch of the armed forces of the United States is eligible to be issued Purple Heart license plates.

1     AN ACT concerning transportation.
 
2     Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3 represented in the General Assembly:
 
4     Section 5. The Illinois Vehicle Code is amended by changing
5 Section 3-623 as follows:
 
6     (625 ILCS 5/3-623)  (from Ch. 95 1/2, par. 3-623)
7     Sec. 3-623. Purple Heart Plates. The Secretary, upon
8 receipt of an application made in the form prescribed by the
9 Secretary of State, may issue to recipients awarded the Purple
10 Heart by a branch of the armed forces of the United States who
11 reside in Illinois, special registration plates. The
12 Secretary, upon receipt of the proper application, may also
13 issue these special registration plates to an Illinois resident
14 who is the surviving spouse of a person who was killed in a
15 foreign war and was awarded the Purple Heart by a branch of the
16 armed forces of the United States. The special plates issued
17 pursuant to this Section should be affixed only to passenger
18 vehicles of the 1st division, including motorcycles, or motor
19 vehicles of the 2nd division weighing not more than 8,000
20 pounds.
21     The design and color of such plates shall be wholly within
22 the discretion of the Secretary of State. Appropriate
23 documentation, as determined by the Secretary, and the
24 appropriate registration fee shall accompany the application.
25 However, for an individual who has been issued Purple Heart
26 plates for a vehicle and who has been approved for benefits
27 under the Senior Citizens and Disabled Persons Property Tax
28 Relief and Pharmaceutical Assistance Act, the annual fee for
29 the registration of the vehicle shall be as provided in Section
30 3-806.3 of this Code.
