| HOUSE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, The Kenwood Oakland Community Organization has a | 3 |
| long and meritorious history of being an effective venue for | 4 |
| low-income and working families to identify and address | 5 |
| community issues; and
| 6 |
| WHEREAS, The Kenwood Oakland Community Organization has an | 7 |
| over 13 year history of ground-breaking youth leadership | 8 |
| development work with in-school, after-school, and weekend | 9 |
| programs; and
| 10 |
| WHEREAS, The Kenwood Oakland Community Organization | 11 |
| believes in working locally while thinking globally; and
| 12 |
| WHEREAS, Representatives of the Kenwood Oakland Community | 13 |
| Organization were successful in organizing a two-day Youth | 14 |
| Summit as a part of the historic United Nations World | 15 |
| Conference Against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia, | 16 |
| and Related Intolerances (WCAR) held August 28, 2001 through | 17 |
| September 7, 2001 in Durban, South Africa; and
| 18 |
| WHEREAS, Representatives of the Kenwood Oakland Community | 19 |
| Organization successfully created a safe space for young people | 20 |
| to have their voices heard at the conference, which resulted in | 21 |
| the youth calling for a face-to-face International Youth | 22 |
| Network, which was supported by the United Nations; and
| 23 |
| WHEREAS, The Kenwood Oakland Community Organization | 24 |
| mobilized 250 youth leaders to attend the Movement Beyond | 25 |
| Borders Conference May 1, 2003 to May 3, 2003 in Washington, | 26 |
| D.C., as the first official U.S. follow-up activity to the | 27 |
| WCAR; and
| 28 |
| WHEREAS, The youth representatives of the Kenwood Oakland | 29 |
| Community Organization requested and received a mandate from |

| the conference to host a National Youth Conference in Chicago | 2 |
| in 2004; and
| 3 |
| WHEREAS, The youth representatives of the Kenwood Oakland | 4 |
| Community Organization collaborated with organizations and | 5 |
| agencies nationwide to organize and implement a National Youth | 6 |
| Conference entitled "Towards a Common Struggle...Organizing a | 7 |
| National Agenda for a Young People's Movement" held at Jones | 8 |
| College Preparatory High School April 3, 2004 through April 4, | 9 |
| 2004; and
| 10 |
| WHEREAS, The young people made the call for a National | 11 |
| Youth Network, which was supported by the conference | 12 |
| participants; therefore, be it
| 13 |
| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | 14 |
| NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | 15 |
| pledge our support to the development of the National Youth | 16 |
| Network and the Kenwood Oakland Community Organization in its | 17 |
| mission of developing youth leaders who are prepared to create | 18 |
| positive change in our communities; and be it further
| 19 |
| RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 20 |
| presented to the Kenwood Oakland Community Organization as an | 21 |
| expression of our esteem.
