SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Gilbert Carl Nolde of Peoria, who passed away on August 19, 2023; and

WHEREAS, Gilbert Nolde was born in Saint Louis, Missouri on June 8, 1930; he attended Soldan High School in Saint Louis and graduated from the Missouri School of Journalism at the University of Missouri; he married Jocyle A. Wilson on February 28, 1953; and

WHEREAS, Gilbert Nolde began working in Washington, D.C. as a Russian translator for the United States government; he then accepted a position in Peoria with Caterpillar Tractor, where he worked for 37 years and had a fulfilling career in several departments, including the advertising department in Geneva, Switzerland, which was one of his favorites; while living in Europe, he enjoyed traveling, especially his trips to London for work and to see all things Shakespeare; and

WHEREAS, Gilbert Nolde became involved in church life and community service in Peoria; he served on numerous boards for organizations, including the American Cancer Society, the United Way, Look. It's My Book!, the Crittendon Center, Lutheran Social Services of Illinois, and the Illinois Central College Foundation; he taught adult Bible study for over 50 years, including during his residence at Lutheran Hillside Village; and

WHEREAS, Gilbert Nolde was a lifelong learner and reader and enjoyed attending continuing education classes at Illinois Central College, Bradley University, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, and Björklunden at Lawrence University; he passed his passion for Russian literature and reading to his entire family; and

WHEREAS, Gilbert Nolde's favorite things included family, family visits, and pets; he enjoyed winning at Bridge, Pinochle, and various other card and board games; and

WHEREAS, Gilbert Nolde is survived by his wife of 70 years, Jocyle; his daughters, Kendra (Jeff Lindgren), Susan (Jeffrey Goldberg), Judy (Ken Smith), and Mindy (John Knudsen); his grandchildren, Eric Lindgren, Jenny Goldberg, Matthew (Kookai) Goldberg, Sammi Goldberg (Anshum Garg), Jacob Moore, Kaitlyn Moore, Sara Knudsen, Emily Smith (Ray Gesiakowski), Ethan (Jessica) Smith, Allison Knudsen, Ben Knudsen, and Emma Knudsen; his great-grandchildren, Austin Goldberg, Jackson Goldberg, Adrian Smith, and Vivian Smith; and a great-granddaughter due in November; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Gilbert Carl Nolde and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Gilbert Nolde as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
