SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Judge Matthew Maurer of Springfield, who passed away on July 23, 2023; and

WHEREAS, Judge Maurer was born in Springfield to Dr. Joseph Jude and Rosetta M. Tega Maurer on May 21, 1961; he graduated from Griffin High School in 1980 and the University of Illinois College of Law in 1987; he married Kristina "Kris" McCarthy on January 13, 1995; and

WHEREAS, Judge Maurer began his career as a prosecutor in the states attorney's office; he later served in private practice, as a felony public defender, and as first assistant states attorney; he was appointed judge of the 7th Judicial Circuit in 2013; and

WHEREAS, Judge Maurer was charitable towards many area organizations, including the St. John's College of Nursing Scholarship Fund, W.I.L.D. Canine Rescue, Helping Hands, and many others; he was a member of Koke Mill Christian Church; and

WHEREAS, Judge Maurer was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears, Illini basketball and football, NASCAR, and Formula One racing; he enjoyed watching Gunsmoke and Wagon Train; one of his favorite childhood memories was riding in pony shows in Valley View; he was also known to be an accomplished baseball and basketball player; and

WHEREAS, Judge Maurer was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings, Dr. JoAnne M. Maurer, John A. Maurer, and Dr. Chris L. Maurer; his father-in-law, Kevin L. McCarthy; and his labs, Teddy and Molly; and

WHEREAS, Judge Maurer is survived by his wife, Kris; his son, Shad Surgis; his daughter, Jenna Maurer; his siblings, Mary Rose (Tom) Hoffman, Joseph J. (Lisa) Maurer Jr., Linda Shoemaker, Diane Howard (Rex Bruss), Dr. Susan Maurer (Denise Wend), and Daniel (Rachael) Maurer; his mother-in-law, Patricia McCarthy (Dennis Poss); his brothers-in-law, Dr. Mark Gekas, Kevin (Rhonda) McCarthy, and Kyle McCarthy; his sister-in-law, Kim McCarthy; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins; and his golden doodle puppy, Rusty; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Judge Matthew Maurer and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Judge Maurer as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
