SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Hiles Stout of Peoria, who passed away on
4October 31, 2016; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Hiles Stout was born in Peoria to Gale and Mildred
6Stout on May 10, 1935; he graduated from Peoria High School in
71953, where he established records in football, basketball, and
8baseball; he was a standout quarterback and a tough and rugged
9center in basketball, leading Peoria High School to a second
10place finish in the 1953 single-class state tournament; at one
11time, his 1,546 career basketball points and single-game high
12of 48, were records for all local prep players; he was also a
13power-hitting first baseman; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Hiles Stout had many athletic scholarship offers;
15he chose the University of Illinois over Michigan, Notre Dame,
16Miami, Georgia, and Kansas; he went on to become a two-sport
17star for Illinois in both football and basketball, earning
18three football letters and three basketball letters; he also
19played baseball for two years; following graduation, he had
20interest from professional football teams and was offered a
21tryout by the Cleveland Browns; and
 
22    WHEREAS, Hiles Stout married Marcia Kittilsen in 1960; and

1    WHEREAS, Hiles Stout returned to Peoria and worked as a
2sales representative for Caterpillar, Inc.; he then went on to
3serve several years in the United States Marine Corps; he
4returned to Peoria after completing his military service, and
5in the early 1960s accepted an offer to form an insurance
6agency partnership; he owned the Hecht-Stout Insurance Agency
7for many years; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Hiles Stout was inducted into the Greater Peoria
9Sports Hall of Fame and the Illinois Basketball Coaches
10Association Hall of Fame; he enjoyed handball, tennis, and
11running, completing three marathons; he loved spending the
12winter months in Marco Island, Florida and spent countless
13hours watching his grandkids participate in youth, high school,
14and college sports; he co-founded the St. Jude Tennis Classic;
15he was a successful fundraiser for the St. Jude Midwest
16Affiliate, chairing the event for 26 years and raising more
17than $1 million; he attended Grace Presbyterian Church for 50
18years; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Hiles Stout was preceded in death by his wife,
20Marcia; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Hiles Stout is survived by his children, Wade
22Stout, Sally (Steve) Ferlmann, and Susie (Jeff) Sorenson, and

1his grandchildren, Melissa, Claire, Jessica, Peter, Katie,
2Wyatt, Alex, Michael, Ellie, and John; therefore, be it
 
3    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
4ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
5Hiles Stout, and extend our sincere condolences to his family,
6friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further
 
7    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
8presented to the family of Hiles Stout as an expression of our
9deepest sympathy.
