SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Michael Edward Pollock of Urbana, who
4passed away on May 28, 2017; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Michael Pollock was born in Cleveland, Ohio on
6June 5, 1949; he, his older sister, Betsy Lou, and the rest of
7his family eventually landed in Highland Park; he graduated
8from the University of Illinois in 1967 with majors in
9political science and history, and where he was involved in the
10civil rights and anti-war movements; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Michael Pollock married Renee and they spent 45
12years together; they had two children, Elisabeth (Christian
13Ray) and Henry, and two grandchildren, Gabriel and Tristan; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Michael Pollock was a co-owner of Record Service,
15a mainstay of the alternative campus community, where he spent
1627 years; he was an Urbana alderman for eight years, chairman
17of the Urbana Plan Commission for 12 years, and board member
18and president of the Eastern Illinois Foodbank; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Michael Pollock went back to school at Eastern
20Illinois University, earning a teaching certificate and a
21master's degree in history; he began his second career as a

1social studies teacher at Urbana High School; he loved working
2with students and introducing them to the world of critical
3thinking and historical analysis; he wrote a class called
4Modern American History through film and music; his room rocked
5with music, often to the dismay of his colleagues; he was also
6department head and the sponsor for the Gay-Straight Alliance;
7and
 
8    WHEREAS, Michael Pollock ran a mock election program,
9registered voters, and had many students work as county
10election judges to encourage their future involvement in civic
11life; he also mentored many student teachers; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Michael Pollock enjoyed gardening, canning,
13biking, reading, woodworking, and creating quirky idiomatic
14art; therefore, be it
 
15    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
16ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
17Michael Edward Pollock, and extend our sincere condolences to
18his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
19further
 
20    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
21presented to the family of Michael Pollock as an expression of
22our deepest sympathy.
