| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | 3 | | learn of the death of Luke Miller of Champaign, who passed away | 4 | | on March 11, 2017; and | 5 | | WHEREAS, Luke Miller was born in Urbana to Ryan and Heather | 6 | | (Cupps) Miller on May 6, 2001; and
| 7 | | WHEREAS, Luke Miller was a sophomore at Champaign | 8 | | Centennial High School; he was a member of the Charger archery | 9 | | and golf teams, and was awarded an academic letter in the fall | 10 | | of 2016; and
| 11 | | WHEREAS, Luke Miller was one of the top male archery | 12 | | shooters in the State; he excelled in the sport not only as an | 13 | | athlete, but as a teammate and he demonstrated excellent | 14 | | sportsmanship; in 2016, at the NASP Archery Tournament in | 15 | | Louisville, Kentucky, he placed in the top 1% of shooters | 16 | | ranking him 55th out of nearly 13,000 total participants; he | 17 | | was also a talented budding artist and participated in many art | 18 | | classes at Centennial; he recently had his art displayed at a | 19 | | juried show at the Illini Union Art Gallery; and
| 20 | | WHEREAS, Luke Miller began working with the Urbana Park | 21 | | District Urban Planning Department in the summer of 2016 where |

| 1 | | he was learning about park management and natural resources for | 2 | | a potential career;
he was an active member of the All School | 3 | | 4-H Club having served as President, Vice-President, and | 4 | | Treasurer during his eight years in 4-H; he won many awards at | 5 | | the Illinois State Fair including Grand Champion and State | 6 | | Superior ribbons in photography, geology, art, and sport | 7 | | fishing; he was instrumental in mentoring younger 4-H members | 8 | | in their projects and encouraging them to get involved in other | 9 | | 4-H activities; and
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Luke Miller played Little League baseball for the | 11 | | American and Champaign East Little Leagues; he was often the | 12 | | tall lefty at first base, and had a curve ball that left many | 13 | | batters and umpires stumped; he threw one game in his last year | 14 | | as a suited level player with 14 strikeouts, and hit a stand-up | 15 | | triple in the same game; he played for the Jefferson Middle | 16 | | School baseball team during his eight grade year; he was a | 17 | | member of the Science Olympiad Team for three years, was | 18 | | inducted into the National Junior Honor Society, and was on the | 19 | | honor roll; he was a member of the standout Jaguar Archery Team | 20 | | where, as a member of the top-shooting "Gold Team", he was | 21 | | awarded a medal as the Illinois Middle School State Male | 22 | | Champion, and competed at the National and World tournaments; | 23 | | and | 24 | | WHEREAS, Luke Miller had a passion and a zest for life and |

| 1 | | did nothing at less than 100%; he was often called an "old | 2 | | soul" by many because of his maturity and compassion for | 3 | | others; he loved fishing for hours at subdivision ponds, | 4 | | photography, geology, Cardinal baseball, golfing, and spending | 5 | | time with his family and friends; he loved helping others with | 6 | | anything they needed, whether that was talking to someone | 7 | | during a tough time and making them laugh when they needed it, | 8 | | helping with homework, learning how to fish, teaching archery | 9 | | tips, or giving a timely hug; his smile was infectious, his | 10 | | jokes legendary, and he had enough fishing equipment to rival a | 11 | | sporting goods store; he had a big personality and will be | 12 | | missed dearly by so many lives he touched; and | 13 | | WHEREAS, Luke Miller is survived by his parents; his | 14 | | grandparents, Larry and Susan Miller, and Beth and Bill Cupps; | 15 | | his uncles and aunts, Marc and Debbie Miller, and Brad and | 16 | | Laurel Allen; and his beloved cousins, Lilly and Logan Allen; | 17 | | therefore, be it
