SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Helen M. Hawkins of Granite City, who passed away on September 6, 2018; and

WHEREAS, Helen Hawkins was born in Detroit, Michigan to Arthur and Elsie (Sloan) Varley on December 21, 1929; she married Dr. Hubert A. Hawkins on September 23, 1947; and

WHEREAS, Helen Hawkins was the Nameoki Township Clerk for over 25 years; she was a Madison County Board Member since 2002 and an honorary board member of the Metro East Sanitary District; and

WHEREAS, Helen Hawkins was a member of the Chouteau Township Senior Citizens; in January of 2018, she was inducted into the Illinois Senior Citizens Hall of Fame by the Illinois Department of Aging; and

WHEREAS, Helen Hawkins was a member of the American Legion Women's Auxiliary and the VFW Women's Auxiliary; she promoted the Valentines for Vets program; she was an active member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Granite City and enjoyed spending time with her family and friends; and

WHEREAS, Helen Hawkins was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Hubert; her granddaughter, Grace Anne Oehler; and her brother, Will Varley; and

WHEREAS, Helen Hawkins is survived by her children, Debra (Bill) Oehler and Dr. Mark (Janie) Hawkins; her grandchildren, Amanda Hawkins (Mehdi Tazi), Taylor Hawkins, Alyssa Hawkins, Heidi Oehler, and Gabriel Oehler; her great-grandchildren, Jaiden Tazi and Zaina Tazi; and her sister, Winnie Christmas; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Helen M. Hawkins, and extend our sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Helen Hawkins as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
