SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of George Makela of Waukegan, who passed
4away on July 15, 2018; and
 
5    WHEREAS, George Makela was born in Waukegan to Oiva and
6Edna Makela on August 26, 1922; he graduated from Waukegan High
7School in 1942 and joined the U.S. Marines; he served during
8World War II in the Pacific and rose to the rank of Sergeant;
9and
 
10    WHEREAS, Following his service during World War II, George
11Makela worked with his father at the family store, Makela's
12Grocery; he retired from Copley Newspaper as a classified ad
13manager; and
 
14    WHEREAS, George Makela refereed basketball in Lake County
15for 15 years; he loved to play golf at Bonnie Brook Golf Course
16in Waukegan; he also enjoyed morning coffee with his breakfast
17friends at The Sunset House and The Avalon; he and his wife
18spent many years wintering in Ahwatukee, Arizona; and
 
19    WHEREAS, George Makela participated in an Honor Flight to
20Washington D.C. with fellow World War II veterans; and

1    WHEREAS, George Makela was preceded in death by his parents
2and his brother-in-law, Len Huber; and
 
3    WHEREAS, George Makela is survived by his wife of 72 years,
4Jean Makela; his son, Rob (Kathy) Makela; his grandchildren,
5Scott (Kelly) Makela, Ted Makela, and Kiirsti (Dan) Kamrath;
6his great-grandchildren, Kaari and Kamy Makela and RJ Kamrath;
7Clyde and Helen Fawcett, Peggy (T-T) Fawcett, the entire
8Fawcett Family, and the Louis Ross Family; therefore, be it
 
9    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
10ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
11George Makela, and extend our sincere condolences to his
12family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
13further
 
14    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
15presented to the family of George Makela as an expression of
16our deepest sympathy.
