SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Julia "Becky" Lewis Smith, who passed away on May 7, 2018; and

WHEREAS, Julia Smith was born to Carl Hamilton Lewis and Mary Katherine Goff on December 5, 1939, the oldest of five children; she attended Holy Angels Catholic School and Church and then attended Saint Elizabeth Catholic High School; and

WHEREAS, Julia Smith worked at the Louise Burg Hospital, Michael Reese, and Mercy Hospitals, where she was a nurse; she also worked in the Security Department at Carson Pirie Scott; she retired from Carson's in 1994; and

WHEREAS, Julia Smith was an avid reader and community historian; as a Board Member, she was the beloved Sergeant at Arms of the Chesterfield Community Council for more than 25 years; she was also a former active member of the Happy Action Seniors at St. Joachim Church; she was a dependable volunteer and active in her community; and

WHEREAS, Julia Smith was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Samuel Jerome Smith; her brother, James H. Lewis; and her sister, Mary R. Cleary; and

WHEREAS, Julia Smith is survived by her daughter, Waunema Smith; her brother, Emmett R. Lewis; her sister, Teresa L. (Maurice) Thornton; and her many other family members and friends; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Julia "Becky" Lewis Smith and extend our sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Julia Smith as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
