SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of James Earl "Jimmy" Harlan, who passed away on May 14, 2018; and

WHEREAS, James Harlan was born in Meridian, Mississippi to Pastor Herbert Sr. and Florence Harlan on December 16, 1946; he attended Lawson Grammar School and Harrison High School in Chicago; he was a member of the Greater Galilee Baptist Church of Chicago and joined the U.S. Army in 1967; he served during the Vietnam War as a specialist 4th class military policeman; he married Debra on December 22, 1985; and

WHEREAS, James Harlan retired after many years at Sanford Inc.; after retirement, he worked at Proviso East High School until 2015, where he was affectionately known as "Old School"; and

WHEREAS, James Harlan was the co-founder of Answer Inc.; he was president of the Just for Men support group and assistant to the cancer support group at the Edward Hines Jr. Veterans Administration Hospital; he was recognized as a veteran by the Cook County Commissioner; and

WHEREAS, James Harlan was a member of the Jordan Temple Baptist Church in Hillside; he enjoyed watching sports, especially football and basketball; he also enjoyed "stepping" with his wife and spending time with his family and friends; and

WHEREAS, James Harlan was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Herbert Harlan Jr.; and

WHEREAS, James Harlan is survived by his wife, Debra Vines; his sons, Mark (Temekia) Shambry and Jason Harlan; his brother, Bill Harlan; extended family member, John (LaVonne) Baggett; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of James Earl "Jimmy" Harlan, and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of James Harlan as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
