SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Peter H. Huizenga of Oak Brook, who passed away on May 2, 2018; and

WHEREAS, Peter Huizenga was born in a Dutch community outside of Chicago to a family of garbage haulers in 1939; as a child during summers, he worked on a garbage truck from 2 a.m. until noon each day and learned the value of hard work, and the power of friendship, faith, and determination; after graduating from Hope College, he was a Captain in the United States Army Reserve and then attended law school at the University of Illinois; and

WHEREAS, Peter Huizenga began his career practicing law at the firm of Hlustik, Huizenga, Williams and VanderWoude; in 1968, he joined his family's garbage business, which evolved into Waste Management Inc. and became a Fortune 500 company; at Waste Management, he served as a Director for 30 years, held various office roles, and helped take the company public in 1972; Waste Management was the largest waste disposal company in the world; he was also an early investor in Blockbuster Video and many other businesses; and

WHEREAS, Peter Huizenga was a philanthropist and active with the Big Shoulders Fund, Timothy Christian Schools, Christ Church of Oak Brook, Trinity Christian College, Elim Christian Services, Hope College, the Boy Scouts of America, and many other organizations; and

WHEREAS, Peter Huizenga loved his family, his faith, and making a difference in people's lives through philanthropy and business pursuits; relationships and helping others were at the core of who he was as a person and as a businessman; and

WHEREAS, Peter Huizenga was the loving husband of 50 years of Heidi; the father of Betsy (Dave) Bradley, Greta Huizenga, Peter Jr. (Abby) Huizenga, and Tim Huizenga; the grandfather of Elizabeth, Matthew, William, and Michael Bradley, Soleil and Noah Huizenga Giesen, and Hally, Hope, Peter III "Tripp" and Hannah Huizenga; and the brother of Sue Kanis, Virginia "Ginger" Jurries, John Charles "J.C." Huizenga, and the late Elizabeth "B.J." Buntrock; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Peter H. Huizenga and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Peter H. Huizenga as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
