SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Peter H. Huizenga of Oak Brook, who
4passed away on May 2, 2018; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Peter Huizenga was born in a Dutch community
6outside of Chicago to a family of garbage haulers in 1939; as a
7child during summers, he worked on a garbage truck from 2 a.m.
8until noon each day and learned the value of hard work, and the
9power of friendship, faith, and determination; after
10graduating from Hope College, he was a Captain in the United
11States Army Reserve and then attended law school at the
12University of Illinois; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Peter Huizenga began his career practicing law at
14the firm of Hlustik, Huizenga, Williams and VanderWoude; in
151968, he joined his family's garbage business, which evolved
16into Waste Management Inc. and became a Fortune 500 company; at
17Waste Management, he served as a Director for 30 years, held
18various office roles, and helped take the company public in
191972; Waste Management was the largest waste disposal company
20in the world; he was also an early investor in Blockbuster
21Video and many other businesses; and
 
22    WHEREAS, Peter Huizenga was a philanthropist and active

1with the Big Shoulders Fund, Timothy Christian Schools, Christ
2Church of Oak Brook, Trinity Christian College, Elim Christian
3Services, Hope College, the Boy Scouts of America, and many
4other organizations; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Peter Huizenga loved his family, his faith, and
6making a difference in people's lives through philanthropy and
7business pursuits; relationships and helping others were at the
8core of who he was as a person and as a businessman; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Peter Huizenga was the loving husband of 50 years
10of Heidi; the father of Betsy (Dave) Bradley, Greta Huizenga,
11Peter Jr. (Abby) Huizenga, and Tim Huizenga; the grandfather of
12Elizabeth, Matthew, William, and Michael Bradley, Soleil and
13Noah Huizenga Giesen, and Hally, Hope, Peter III "Tripp" and
14Hannah Huizenga; and the brother of Sue Kanis, Virginia
15"Ginger" Jurries, John Charles "J.C." Huizenga, and the late
16Elizabeth "B.J." Buntrock; therefore, be it
 
17    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
18ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
19Peter H. Huizenga and extend our sincere condolences to his
20family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
21further
 
22    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
