HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Distracted driving occurs when motorists engage
3in activities that divert their attention from driving safely;
4these can include texting, talking on a cell phone, adjusting
5the radio, and interacting with passengers; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Safe driving and public awareness of the dangers
7associated with distracted driving will result in fewer traffic
8crashes, fewer injuries, and fewer fatalities; and
 
9    WHEREAS, In 2015, distracted driving was a factor in motor
10vehicle crashes that killed 3,459 people, nationally; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Educating and informing the public about
12distracted driving, enhancing public awareness of the dangers
13associated with driving while distracted, ensuring younger
14drivers understand the consequences of driving distracted, and
15obeying established distracted driving traffic laws will
16reduce the number of fatalities and injuries; and
 
17    WHEREAS, The Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police
18(ILACP), partnering with the American Automobile Association
19(AAA) and supported by the Illinois State Police, the Illinois
20Department of Transportation, the Illinois High School &
21College Driver Education Association (IHSCDEA), local law

1enforcement agencies, and the State's first responders are
2committed to educate Illinois residents on all aspects of
3distracted driving, to enforce applicable State laws and to
4support Illinois Distracted Driving Awareness Week; and
 
5    WHEREAS, The ILACP and the AAA continue to develop
6partnerships designed to create and enhance a strong,
7supportive traffic safety culture throughout Illinois;
8therefore, be it
 
9    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
10HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
11declare the fourth week of April 2018 as "Illinois Distracted
12Driving Awareness Week"; and be it further
 
13    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
14presented to the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police, the
15American Automobile Association, the Illinois State Police,
16the Illinois Department of Transportation, and the Illinois
17High School & College Driver Education Association.
