HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives wish to recognize the 2017 celebration of India Independence Day in Oak Brook; and

WHEREAS, Independence Day is celebrated annually in India as a national holiday, commemorating the nation's independence from the United Kingdom in 1947; it is one of three national holidays in India along with Republic Day and Mahatma Gandhi's birthday; and

WHEREAS, India attained independence following the Independence Movement, noted for its largely nonviolent resistance and civil disobedience led by the Indian National Congress; and

WHEREAS, Today we honor the sacrifices made by many to achieve independence, and gather to celebrate the Indian culture and the Indian community; and

WHEREAS, The Indian diaspora celebrates Independence Day around the world, particularly in regions with high concentrations of Indian immigrants; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we recognize the 2017 celebration of India Independence Day in Oak Brook and send our best wishes for a memorable celebration on the 71st anniversary of India's independence.
