HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives wish to recognize the 125th anniversary of the founding of Glen Carbon; and

WHEREAS, Glen Carbon, which means "Valley of Coal", was incorporated in 1892; it was an area already rich in agriculture, mining, and railroading and served as a hub of travel for people and goods; and

WHEREAS, Glen Carbon had many industries throughout the years; bricks manufactured by the St. Louis Brick Company located in the Village, were used in buildings in Forest Park for the 1904 World's Fair; in 1898, the first volunteer fire department was created; and

WHEREAS, Glen Carbon became a melting pot of nationalities and a community where people watched out and cared for each other; and

WHEREAS, The history of Glen Carbon can be found in the Glen Carbon Heritage Museum, housed in a building built in 1914 and originally used as the local school; and

WHEREAS, Today, Glen Carbon is known by some as a "quiet hamlet" and has a small town image that is loved by both residents and visitors; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we recognize the 125th anniversary of the founding of Glen Carbon, and we wish it many more wonderful years; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Glen Carbon Mayor Robert Jackstadt.
