HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Philip T.
4Kalayil, who passed away on March 13, 2017 at the age of 86;
5and
 
6    WHEREAS, Philip Kalayil always desired to immigrate to the
7United States; he left Kerala, India in January of 1956 and
8arrived in Chicago in March of 1956; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Philip Kalayil earned a graduate degree in
10sociology from Loyola University and began working with
11Catholic Charities; he joined the City of Chicago's Department
12of Human Services and served as the Assistant Director of
13Emergency Services until his retirement in 1992; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Philip Kalayil worked with the Crossroads
15International Center, organizing activities for international
16students; he volunteered building institutions in the India
17American community; in the early 1970s, he was one of the
18founders of Asian Forum, a pan-Asian organization that looked
19at strengthening the Asian American coalition of Chicago, where
20his work led to many of today's Asian American and South Asian
21American civic organizations; he was also very instrumental in
22founding the Indo-American Democratic Organization in 1981,

1which is one of the oldest political organizations in Chicago;
2and
 
3    WHEREAS, Philip Kalayil was a shining example of the
4immigrant contribution to the strength of Illinois and the
5United States; his legacy in building the foundation for Asian
6American political participation in the Chicago area will be
7long-lasting; his commitment to coalition building and
8pan-Asian cooperation has created a lasting impression on the
9Illinois Asian American community for generations to come; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Philip Kalayil was preceded in death by his
11daughter, Lisa; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Philip Kalayil is survived by his wife of 67
13years, Annamma; his children, Tom, Sales, and Ann, along with
14their spouses; his son-in-law, Tom; and his grandchildren;
15therefore, be it
 
16    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
17HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
18mourn the passing of Philip T. Kalayil, and extend our sincere
19condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved
20him; and be it further
 
21    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be

2our deepest sympathy.
