HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to commend The Authors Guild for its
4longstanding service to and advocacy on behalf of authors in
5the State of Illinois and in the United States; and
 
6    WHEREAS, The Authors Guild is the nation's oldest and
7largest professional organization for writers, with over 9,000
8current members that include novelists, historians,
9journalists, poets, academics, and independently published
10authors; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Since 1912, The Authors Guild has been supporting
12and protecting American authors' constitutional and moral
13rights to write and speak freely and to benefit from their
14work, as well as providing working writers with the knowledge,
15support, and resources they need to succeed; and
 
16    WHEREAS, The Authors Guild advocates on issues of
17copyright, fair contracts, free speech, and fair tax treatment,
18provides legal advice to its members on all issues pertinent to
19the writing profession, lobbies for authors on Capitol Hill,
20negotiates with publishers and other industry players for fair
21contract terms and treatment, and litigates when authors'
22rights come under threat; and

1    WHEREAS, Authors are facing unprecedented challenges in
2the form of declining incomes from writing as a consequence of
3changes wrought on the publishing industry by the technologies
4and pressures exerted by corporate interests; and
 
5    WHEREAS, The Authors Guild provides important educational
6and informal resources and tools to assist authors in
7understanding and surviving the changing publishing landscape
8and provides community to assist in the exchange of knowledge
9for those who often are isolated in their working life; and
 
10    WHEREAS, The Authors Guild is motivated by the belief that
11a diverse literary landscape that encompasses the entire range
12of expression of ideas, stories, and experiences of all
13American people is essential to our democracy; and
 
14    WHEREAS, The work of authors is vital to a democratic
15society; therefore, be it
 
16    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
17HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
18commend The Authors Guild for its service to the community of
19authors in the State of Illinois and in the United States; and
20be it further
